I don't have room for industrial sewing machine but want a simple, but sturdy and fast sewing machine like Janome 1600p-dbx. What else is available in the market?

Edited: I only sew garments, and I already have a Janome and a Brother serger. I just need something that'll do straight stitch really fast, but with really good pressure too. The quality just has to be somewhere between my regular Janome and a Juki industrial sewing machine that I use at school...

I have the 1600P-DBX and its main competitors are the Juki TL-98 and a Brother brand (I can't find the model). I see you're in southern California, do you have the chance to stop by Sewing Machines Plus to test out the machines? I bought my 1600P-DBX from them in 2010, they're great to work with.

The Juki has a new model number, it's TL-2010Q. These machines are marketed towards quilters for FMQing.

I sew mostly clothing and wanted a fast straight stitch (also lack of room for a true industrial). If I can get the vintage Greist buttonholer to work perfectly on this machine every time, it'll do everything I need!

PortlandMaine has a Pfaff Grand Quilter he reviewed here It's pretty fast; about 1600 spm--faster than a serger.

I have and love the Juki TL-2010Q mentioned above. It only sews a straight stitch of course, but it's powerful and fast and sews through lots of layers without slowing down. Now I wish all my machines cut the tread by tapping the foot pedal. It also has a knee lift, and needle up/down. So it has everything I need, except for a zig zag, a couple of other stitches and the IDT foot...lol. I like the narrow feed dogs, and it sews smooth, quiet and fast!!!

I could do that. I work in downtown LA so I could drop by I guess.
I've never bought sewing machines from a store before. Would they get annoyed if I don't make the purchase that day..? hehe

Yah, I don't quilt, I make clothes and have a very sturdy Janome I love so naturally, I started checking out another Janome machine. I'll get all the brand/models together and compare at the store or online!

The selection on Sewing Machines Plus (online, at least) is pretty vast, I expect they'd have quite a bit on the floor. A great vendor should be there to educate and support you and they should never make you feel bad if you don't make a purchase.

Since I've only dealt with SMP online I can't vouch for their treatment of in-store customers. You could call ahead and ask to speak to someone to explain your needs, that way you can get a feeling of how they treat a potential customer before you waste gas and time for a visit.

Of course they would not mind. If they did, they would not have many customers.

They should be happy to demo and let you try.

Take a few samples of the fabrics you normally work with for the test drive.

Sewing Machines Plus is in San Marcos, CA as in Northeastern San Diego County. You'd be about two hours north, so it's not quite a true "drop by", unless if you have a very long lunch hour...
