How would you finish the edge of this fabric? Big lace, almost crochet
birdmcfarland Intermediate PA USA Member since 8/1/08 Posts: 932	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 3/17/13 12:47 PM I was at Fabric Mart last week and got this red floral lace/crochet - I don't know what you'd call it - and cut out the pieces for the blue lace top in the pattern: How would you finish the hem, armscyes and sleeve hems on this? Silk bias binding in the same color fabric? My first problem is finding matching fabric in order to make the bias binding. Wright's bias tape in red matches this perfectly, but think that would make it too stiff and not allow for movement. I thought this was going to be a quickie project, but I didn't eve give the nature of the fabric a thought. I sewed a few scraps together and it wasn't pretty - the gaps were tough to deal with. Depending on how moldable the selvedge is you may even be able to steam it into shape enough that you could use that as the neckline finish also. Debbie

That will look absolutely adorable and will save a significant amount of aggravation. I already cut the pieces, but fortunately added an inch to the hem which will give me plenty to work with so its even. Thanks so much!!

Otherwise I like the idea to trim around the design and leave it unfinished. If your lace is ravelly you could serge it. I did a cotton lace top and just serged an edge and turned it up as normal. I tried to serge at the widest point of the design. It's going to be a cute top...can't wait to see the finished product! I've got that pattern too but planning to make the sleeveless black & white view.
