At my age, my thighs are definitely not picturesque and are apt to rub together uncomfortably. A few years ago, longer board shorts for women were fashionable. I had a pair and absolutely loved them! They were flattering and functional. Unfortunately, they were lost in a move and the style was quickly replaced by a much shorter version that managed to be worse in every area.

I came across this Jalie pattern and thought it looked very similar to my beloved board shorts of days gone by.

Jalie Board Shorts

I haven't seen a pattern for women, so I'm wondering how difficult it might be to modify this male pattern to fit a female form? Is it worth it?

As a general rule mens patterns are less full through the thighs than womens in comparison to the waist measurement. The crotch is cut a little fuller in the front curve and shorter in the back curve. If you compare your measurements to the patterns, you should be able to tell if it is worth altering the pattern. If you are willing to make a couple of muslins you should end up with a pattern you like.
Another option might be to cut longer shorts from a womens draw string pants pattern. They might be easier to fit.

Thanks Nan Kay! That's good to know. As a beginner, I was worried that I might be biting off more than I can chew. Great idea about morphing the draw string shorts pattern into board shorts! Perhaps I could use both a women's shorts pattern and this Jalie pattern. The Jalie pattern might help walk me through the swim wear process while the women's pattern might help me with fit.

Using both patterns is a good idea. You can get the look of the board shorts and still not spend to much time with muslins!

An alternative pattern suggestion you might try is New Look 6354.
It has the drawstring and boardshort styling, and might be an easier place to start than the Jalie mens pattern.

That's a *great* pattern, wenznz! Thanks for suggesting it.
