I cannot tell you how my heart is breaking. My funny, quirky, stubborn girl is coming to the end...she was due to have surgery this week for a large tumor on her hind leg. When it popped up last year, our previous vet diagnosed it as an abcess, drained it and that was that. It was not an abcess..it was a cancerous tumor. In the last few months it has come back with a vengence, nearly triple the size it was last year. I took her in over the weekend for some preop testing and because she seemed to be uncomfortable and was not eating well.

She has lost almost 30 pounds! I was stunned and devestated, as I honestly did not notice she was losing weight. The vet has sent some blood work out to the state lab, but she told me that they can not do the surgery...the weight loss indicates that she is in a very weakened state and that she would probably not survive the surgery. She advised me to take her home, keep her comfortable and cherish every day I have left with her. She is on Rimadyl and Tramadol for the pain and inflammation.

I go from being resolved to what is happening to being a complete weepy mess. I don't know how long we have left together, and will know more when the results of her blood work come back tomorrow, but already my sense of loss and grief is overwhelming. For the last 11 years she has been everything to me...my constant companion and dearest loyal friend.

I only hope that when the time comes that I have the strength and courage to do the right thing for her and not prolong her suffering to ease my grief. Please pray for my girl.

Oh I am so so sorry to read this about your BFF (best furry family) Ginger the wonderful dog. ..... prayers going out for her & you right now. ................. will she eat anything at all? Perhaps some boiled chicken cut up well? or as I have seen my sister do for sick doggers ..hamburger cooked well with a little cottage cheese mixed in? .....
I am so very sorry to hear this ....my heart goes out to you both...

Thank you so much. She is eating, but not with any real enthusiasm. She is also very quiet, which is not her character at all. Being part husky, she loves to talk and she hasn't said much in the last few days. I am sure she feels my heartbreak. She has been so affectionate lately that it makes it even more difficult. I am sure she is trying to comfort me. I just want her to be comfortable and happy as she can be for the time she has left with me.

Yes, very important that you both be as comfortable & happy as you can. ... my friend's greyhound had bone cancer in left hind leg ... they were blessed to have her an additional 3 months after the diagnosis, the first greyhound they had with bone cancer I was there housesitting & he fell & broke his hip, that was very very hard on all of us.... You will know when it is time for her to go to the Rainbow Bridge to wait for you. .... I truly believe we will see them again....
God Bless you Deb & you too Ginger the wonderful pupster...+

I am so sorry. It is so hard, and many of us have been there and pray for you and wish we were there to hug you.

It is so very difficult when a pet your love is hurting. Good friends are not easy to find and very hard to let go of. So sorry this has happened.

I'm so sorry. Many of us have been through similar awful times, and still, we can't come up with any words to alleviate the pain. You and Ginger are very lucky to have had each other.
