Date: 3/19/13 7:26 AM I was listening to Pat Sloan's podcast last night and she talked to the vp of craftsy. She explained how it all worked and seemingly a good thing. A lot of different quilting gurus teaching. There are free classes to, to let you get the feel of the way it works. I think it's pretty cool.I've never really bothered with it as I think it's expensive. However back in the day we had this for free it was called PBS and all the well known sewing celebs had shows on and guests. I'm not saying craftsy isn't a good thing it absolutely is. Craftsy has really hit on something. I need to go find that interview. I am curious about how they developed the idea and got this into production. The future of online courses is limitless. I first became familiar with the idea when my son took an online course in high school. What!!! But it allowed him to learn something that the school could not have offered as well as going at his own pace. As you mentioned, if anyone is curious, they offer free classes, you might check one of those out just to see how it works. I just watched one on Modern Buttercream. I have taken several classes on Craftsy. I think their prices are competitive with other class sources and feel talented people should be paid fairly. Plus there are always sales if you can wait for them. I appreciate seeing how the item is made and most importantly, I can watch it repeatedly, which my brain really needs. Date: 3/19/13 8:09 AM I learned about Craftsy after taking a serger class here on PR and being severely disappointed. The Craftsy serger class is very thorough and the instructor's class outline goes over everything; even her handouts are many. And I paid less for that class than the one here. While I don't want to "bash" PR's classes, as I've taken many and have been quite happy, I realize times have changed here too. I think the quality of classes changed after Shannon Gifford passed away. Her classes were expensive; the most I've ever paid, but she was worth it. Back in the day that you mention (free quilting classes on PBS, etc.) I also remember several educational stations, like PBS, that offered quilting instruction without commercials. And that is no more. The big quilting names such as Alex Anderson, etc., are now "big" and don't need the free forum they once had. Interestingly, it's online that's taking up the slack and that's fine, even though you might have to pay. I haven't seen any quilting classes here on PR, and I'm not sure if there will be any. There are other sites, such as Quilt University and TheQuiltShow.com that have classes as well. So as much as the world has changed and brought us out of our comfort zones, we can find what we want in other places. ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. I'm taking a class from Elizabeth Hartman (popular blogger & book author) and I did get it on sale for about $20. A live class in my area with a teacher with equivilent creditentials goes for $80-120 for a one or two day class. Most of the classes at my LQS are als in that range. I like it as I can go at my own pace and have the videos to watch over and over....While I'd love to take a class from the other teacher, it's out of my budget currently. Date: 3/19/13 8:49 AM I have signed up for at least eight Craftsy classes and so far I have been delighted with my classes. I love how I can watch the various chapters again if needed. I have taken classes at various places like quilt and sewing shops and at the Sewing Expo at Chantilly, VA and the online classes are much better because Craftsy seems to have made sure they are well done and you don't have the distraction of having people who sometimes want to use a class as a personal PR forum. I have problems concentrating when there is a lot going on around me. Being able to rewatch is wonderful. Plus once you have signed up, Craftsy frequently has sales on the classes. In any event, I find it to be a great bargain. I've taken some classes here on PR and have liked them too. I think that online classes will be the wave of the future and I'm glad to see it. I do wish that PR would expand the list of class offerings. Craftsy has some free classes for those of you who want to get a taste of what it is like. I loved the Pizza making class. I have been making my own bread for years and yet I learned a lot about bread making that I didn't know. My biggest problem with online classes is that I don't have great Internet. I have mobile broadband with a 5 gig limit. I did get a laptop for my birthday recently and have been going to the library to view my classes using their WiFi. I would rather watch at home, but at least now I can watch my classes without running up my Internet bill by going over my allocation. Chris

I've only had 2 "meh" classes, and both are freebie shorts. Hard to be too disappointed in freebies. Craftsy classes are very cost effective, especially with promo sales. Free to $39.99. Cheaper than a good quilting book or premium quilting class. Elly Sienkiewcz applique workshops are $750 for 3 days, plus travel and accommodations, etc. The classes are substantially less expensive than " live" classes in my area. "Live" classes simply do not work for me due to my work schedule and demands. It is rude and disruptive to attend a class, set up my machine, etc. then interrupt everyone when I must leave suddenly for " on call" duties. Not cool. Spoils everyone else's experience. I can watch the Craftsy classes when it's convenient to my schedule...and stop/restart around my work or kid schedules, with no bother to classmates. Generation Q has a fabulous article on the inner workings of Craftsy. Some of the instructors are earning in excess of $100K from their Craftsy offerings. I humbly for one am glad PR is not a quilting site. I was SOOO glad to come across PR when I began to look into the online sewing community and before coming across PR, I thought just about everything was geared toward quilters and this was upsetting to me. I do get a let down when viewing the PR Active Discussions list and the current listing when I come online is mostly quilting, so now I often go direct to the message board. I do appreciate some of the quilting techniques as I can incorporate them into my sewing for design/fiber artistic vent and learning about the celebs, but I do prefer the sewing (or non quilting). I've also come to realize/conclude (and I maybe incorrect) that the sewing reviews for TOL sms are more from the quilters than the sewists (non-quilters). Would be nice if sm reviewers could let us know if they are sewists or quilters when reviewing a machine – I do feel this can affect your experience with a machine -- Edited on 3/19/13 9:18 AM --
