My husband and I are swimmers, and anywhere in the world that we travel, we need to watch the sun....while we are enjoying the sun and water.

We met some skindivers who wear a body suit type swim wear, in the oceans of the world, like a wet suit, but just in lycra. It is a one piece, and as we are big people ,both tall and round!, I have been looking for a pattern or ideas, to draft something.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Was just checking out patterns for a rash guard / swim shirt yesterday. Found some one piece wetsuit type patterns. Kwik sew 2335 and the Jalie skinsuit look good. If you are big, go for the Kwik Sew as it offers bigger sizes or you will have to alter the Jalie as it only goes to 45 inch hips.
For a swim shirt, I need it to be a zip up and found Kwik Sew 2600 and the Jan Bones undies top from Lingerie Secrets. Cycling jerseys look promising too.

Hi,
I have used KS 2335 successfully to make diveskins to wear under wetsuits. At the time I made them, my husband was ~265 lbs and 5 foot 10, and I was ~ 195 & 5 foot 10. Using different sizes in the envelope worked to fit both of us. (You will probably have to find it on ebay, as it is now out of print, I think) Oh - I just googled, it looks like it is available at Hancocks
I had actually purchased the Jalie 3135 , but when it arrived I discovered the sizing didn't go up high enough for me.
Also, Kwik sew has a sun shirt/rash guard top Here that looks like it would work if you just want the top covered.
Good luck,
judy

Here are the listings under "modest swimsuits". You'll notice that religious groups that don't allow their members to expose body parts have many different options for covering up at the beach. And here's a pattern for one of them.

You might look around the net as well for older patterns on sale. Also for older gymwear and unitard patterns from when the leotard thing was in style for the gym.

For instance, I haven't sewn it yet, but I picked up a gymwear pattern in a thriftstore ages ago with the idea of fashioning a more covered swimsuit. Here's a copy of it on the internet Butterick 6579 I've seen others as well.

I actually also had my eye on the Jalie pattern mentioned above.

Thankyou so much for all of your replies, I am very motivated now to get started.
Hubby has meds that make him sun sensitive, and I just stay in the water way too long, so we need good coverage.

I love all the pictures, and had never considered a patterned lycra....way more attractive for me and to me than just plain.

Pamela, The suit I'm wearing in my avatar was made from 2 layers of swimsuit lycra using Kwiksew 3052 view A. It was really easy to fit and sew. I glue-basted the zipper to keep it from puckering. I had enough fabric left over to make a matching one-piece swimsuit. I made another dive skin in a tropical print, and it always gets compliments from other divers.

Check out the swim 'separates' on the Sun Precautions site and the hats on the Sunday Afternoon site for some ideas. We wear 'separates' at the beach. Easy to peel down to our swimsuits at the showers or for the luxury of a swimsuit only plunge in the early hours.

K2881

Shirt, Shorts & Trunks in men's section. Two pieces, the top and the long trunks. The top I think I will make with long sleeves for my sun sensitive DH.

That is exactly what I need.

I wondered what, if anything, goes under it.
