What's the best alteration?

As you can see in the photo, I have extra fabric at my back waist in this ready-to-wear shirt, and I almost always have to deal with that in my sewing, too.

Do you think it's swayback? There's certainly an issue with my back length being too short, but I wonder how much the serious curve at my waist factors in as well.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Looks like testing swayback alterations might be worthwhile. You might try a combination of horizontal (pinching a dart from the back middle out to the seam) and vertical ( scooping a curved section from the waist up and down...this would require using a center back sleeve). Sometimes a combination of the two works better than trying to take the full amount in just one alteration.

ETA: great shot of you and your daughters ~ stunning trio!

Or the torso may just be too long.

Try pinning out an equal amount all the way around (horizontal) between bust and waist.

Thanks, ladies! I'll be making a Jalie shirt this weekend and will experiment.

And those are actually my nieces in the photo on Flickr. Guess you saw some resemblance :)

It looks as if the back of the tee is hanging up on your buttocks--I'd try opening up the side seams and see what happens.

I have this problem with RTW and sewing patterns and it drives me crazy! It turns out that the problem was coming from having a small, straight back and fairly erect posture, much like you. My best solution to date has been to make absolutely sure that the back waist length is right on the money (maybe even a 1/4" on the short side to make sure fabric doesn't hang up on my butt) and then smooth the fabric up towards your middle back (like you were making a bed) to see where on your back the looseness starts (different patterns can have different spots but they're all in the same general area ... for me it's about 4" below my shoulder blades). Once you find the spot, pinch out the extra going to zero at the side seams. HTH

More good suggestions, thank you!

Once I get this figured out, I'll start dealing with the extra fabric beneath the rear end. My butt sure does cause sewing trouble :)
