Scaling patterns
Muldini Intermediate Member since 9/29/10 Posts: 21	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 3/20/13 5:25 PM I'm considering investing in a half-scale dress form and (surprise surprise) am not an exact multiple of the standard sizes, so what do you do when scaling up a pattern? Do you scale up by 1 2/3 for example? Or do you scale up to a standard size then grade down? Which causes less distortion? (Obviously it's not going to be a substitute for fitting)

I have tried scaling up the pattern from a draped design, but found time taken in correcting the errors of scaling a disincentive. I use the half size form a fair bit now to test out ideas, but then redraft in my size or whichever size I need. To get from the half scale to full scale in one swoop you'd need to pad out a half scale form so that it was exactly half scale of your measurements (so start with a smaller size!). Then you'd need a system for scaling up more accurate than the one I used, which was my own scanner printer set up in A4. ------ so many patterns, clamouring to be sewn http://patternpandemonium.wordpress.com/

Going up from a half-scale 8 to a full-size 0 or 2, plus proportionate padding? Plus scaling errors? Sounds like another disincentive!
