Have a Janome snap on foot known as zigzag "A" foot or an all purpose foot that came on a Janome HD 3000 machine. What is the black plastic knob with a tiny short spring attached to it on the back rt side of the foot? Cannot see anything in the manual discussing its purpose so it must involve some special sewing technique. anyone know?
On the Janome site it is 832523007

When you come to a seam intersection, press this and it holds the presser foot up as you go over that thickness! Sort of like a hump-jumper!

After you've pressed it it'll keep the foot flat over the bump which will keep the stitches from getting weird or running the risk of nicking the plate because things are going on an angle.

It's on page 24 of your manual! :)

I have one of these on a babylock foot and was wondering the same thing.

The technique is to stop when the foot cannot maneuver the thicker fabric (like the flat felled seam on jeans) then with the needle down, press the button to release the foot from ridged to flexible.

It's a hump jumper, as stated above. To use it on the Babylock, raise the presser foot as you approach the hump (needle down of course), press the knob, then lower the foot. The foot is then elevated to pass easily over the hump. I've not had a problem getting mine to work.
