I am going to be in NYC this Friday afternoon (March 29) with some time for fabric shopping. Since Passover starts this week, does anyone know if/which stores might be closed for the holiday? TIA!

I doubt if any would be closed. Though I live on the West Coast, and I am not familiar with the East Coast, most stores stay open, save the ones that are purely selling Judaica.

In my opinion, I doubt they would close for Passover. It isn't like a kitchen or bakery, and usually, there is a mixture of staff so that those that are not Jewish will be able to continue working. However, it is Good Friday, and that may mean that stores may close for that, or close early.

I would suggest looking up the shops you are going to visit and possibly call them.

Good luck! And, Happy Holiday, whichever one(s) you celebrate

Call first: I believe PS Fabrics keeps Sabbath. And remember: Sabbath keeping means nobody works: not the Gentile staff, not your guests, not even the shop cat.

Zesan Pesach to all!

(and if you're reading this on Friday: step away from the computer and go have a Gut Shabbos!)

It is possible some stores could close early on the seder nights- tonight and tomorrow- if most of the shop's employees are Jewish.
Gut yontif, gut yor!

Thanks! I want to stop by Spandex House, which I am pretty sure will be open, but otherwise was just going to meander around to see what I can find...

As they say NYC we never sleeps (most stores are open on a Saturday and even a few on Sundays on a normal week), for the holidays some stores may be closed or will close early but there will be plenty open to enjoy.

I would think mood and B&j would be open. I would call ahead to any important places just to be sure.

If the fabric store owner is observant, the store will close early on Friday before sundown, typically 3pm, give or take 30 minutes. Passover seder nights as mentioned are also likely to be early closings (Monday and Tuesday), but the rest of Passover is business as usual. I doubt there are still that many fabric/drygood store owners that are still observant, however. Plenty stay open 7 days a week nowadays.

That Friday is also Good Friday, so some (more observant) Christian store owners may also be closed.

I know that here (TX) my public library is closed Fri/Sat/Mon (never open on Sunday), schools are out Friday, and my company also has Friday as a holiday. We are a chemical company, not religious at all.

Friday should be fine, it's an intermediate day of Passover so not a no work holiday. First two days of Passover and the last two are the days when religious Jews don't work.
