Trade In Broken Sewing Machine?
Should I trade in my Designer One instead of fixing it?

Of course- I would make it abundantly clear that it isn't working-and exactly what is wrong with the machine. (what jerk wouldn't?!). I DO NOT want to keep it as a second machine-haven't used it three years. I know I'm weird.

It;s a Husqvarna Viking Designer One USB-barely used for it's age. Got it new 2007(?) new, had 3 children in short order and . found great deal on Designer Diamond. I think I remember seeing it had 50 sewing hours? That's got to include embroidery.

What's broken- USB. Machine will not acknowledge ANY USB stick. Its knows it's there-it lights up=but will say :disk not inserted or the like. I've tried updates, HV official, formatted sticks, troubleshooting--etc. It probably just needs to be replaced.

Cost of repair- At least $500. That's at a dealer-but I have thought about taking it into a computer repair place-becacuse USB doesn't have anything to do with actual machine operation.

Sorry to ramble-I'm an attorney-don't expect me to be brief.

ANY thoughts would be appreciated.

Maybe I could get a "sewing only" machine? A small one for classes?
Or sell what ever I trade for?

Most of our dealerships do not take trade ins. Unless it is the special sale for Bernina twice a year. That being said, I like my Janome 2212 it is a basic manual sewing machine & it has 4 step buttonholes which I really like for larger size buttonholes & it does a very nice stitch. This is around $169 at our dealership. I think it would do well for classes.
Did your SMG tell you how much for the repair of your TOL sm ? I might repair it if it is not too pricey. As sm are going up so much in price it might be less expensive than a brand new TOL would be.

@ Tgn kittys- I am fortunate to have a TOL machine so I don't want another.
The repair-for me-would be at least $500. but for a dealer-itd probably be a lot less.
You know come to think of it-it'd be awesome to have a nice small sewing machine to keep in my bedroom to do some projects at night.
Maybe I'll jsut call them and ask. Duh.

Can you trade in a broken sewing machine?

My dealer would take ANY machine as a trade (best deal is to go to Walmart and buy one before closing your sale...) but it had to be working.

Having a computer savvy person look at the USB port/connection is an interesting thought.

Gotta a feeling SM dealers just order a complete replacement whatever and then they add on a charge for "not doing actual" labor.

Have your tried an old USB with a low memory? I suspect a machine that old would go for a 64 or 32mb max stick and will not read anything over.

I too think $500 to replace USB is insane. It's not hard-I've done it in a computer-and trust me I'm not that bright. :D
I'm actually debating on doing it myself-because it is already updated-I might be able to just replace the USB drive. (whatever reads the usb-not sure if you call it a drive.)
There's one on ebay for $35.99-bad news is-its from china-so shipping $$ both ways, good news-it seems like it would work.

I am not computer savy ... but what would it cost if you went to like Staples ? The Geek Squad? Or independant computer seller tech ?? Maybe it is SMG that is costing so much. ???
