Hi all,

I'm on my 3rd version of the Moss skirt from Grainline, and it's just not working well on my body. I'm not sure how to diagnose or fix what's going on here, so any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated I really want to find a way to make this work for me! I've done a lot of reading, and found several possible solutions, but I'm not convinced I've stumbled upon the right problem/fix yet. This is my first garment from a woven for the lower half of my body. My measurements fall between sizes 8 and 10.

So attempt #1, I made a size 8. I ended up with extra fabric just below the waistband in the yoke area. After walking around the house for a few minutes I had a noticeable horizontal wrinkle in the area, and the back was riding up a little. The skirt was a little snug in the hip/butt area so I thought going up a size might fix things.

Attempt #2, I cut a size 10. Between a poor fabric choice and a waistband mistake, this version didn't really tell me much. Moving on.

Attempt #3, I cut a size 10 in the same fabric I used for #1. Everything just seemed worse. When I held the waistband and skirt in place it gaped in the back and I had even more extra fabric in the yoke area (I was able to pinch out a few inches of horizontal wrinkle). When I left the skirt alone and walked around for a minute the back would ride up at least 4 inches higher than the front. Hip/butt area felt ok.

In both sizes, in addition to the back riding up, the front was... riding down a little... not sure how else to describe that. Whatever was happening in the front was WAY less dramatic than what was going on in the back. But it's like the waistband just wouldn't sit level where it was supposed to sit, in addition to the extra fabric through the yoke.

Any suggestions for me?

If you still have attempt #1, try letting out the seams below the waistband to just below your hips. Then try it on and see how it sits. It sounds like you need more space around your body below the waistband. The skirts is probably hanging up on your hips instead of falling free from your waist.

It's difficult to say what the problem is. Could you take a picture? In the garment pics from their website, it does look like the back is higher than the front. The pics on the form not the hanger pic.

As for the waistband, if you are between an 8 and 10 you just need to make yourself a size 9. You can draw a line right between the 8 and 10. You'll also need to do this on the skirt portion and attaches to the waistband and blend to whatever hip size you need. Thought I suspect this is only part of your problem.

I finally have a blog. www.detectivehoundstooth.com :)

Thank you for your replies! I will work on both of your suggestions, and if I don't get it figured out I'll come back with pictures. Thanks again!

Hey, I think you are having some of the same problems I had with mine (which now fits). I don't have pictures of the FO on the site yet though. 1. the skirt IS lower in the front 2. it should rest below your belly button, 3. you may need to alter the back yoke pattern piece. See my website for some of the things I did to fix mine and some information straight from the pattern's designer too: use this URL http://lifeisexamined.blogspot.com/search/label/Grainline.
