Hi,
A friend's 14 year old daughter is looking to get her first embroidery machine a brother ULT 2003D. She can get a used one for $1300-1500. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about this machine or recommendations if she should get a different one. It comes with 200+ floppies. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

New, it would be a good choice. Used? Depends on how well it was taken care of.

Someone with machine embroidery experience should give it a test drive before making the purchase.

It is an outdated model that is marked down to just under $2,000, which makes the asking price a bit high. The floppies should not be counted as part of the sale.

Does it come with an external floppy reader/writer? Because most computers today do mot have them and she will need it to get designs from the computer to the machine. Other than that, you should be able to go into the settings and check the stitch count-kind of like an odometer on a car.
These were/are great machines. I have the 2002D and it works great (knock wood). I only use it for embroidery.

In 2010 I went from a 1957 401A Singer to the Brother Ultra2003D Pacesetter. I fell in love with it. I was most fortunate to get a well-maintained machine and many cards as well as empty floppies. Yes, I had to purchase a floppy drive to be able to transfer patterns to my machine. I took lessons from Dolly at the Stuart Sew & Vac on how to use it. It was money well-spent. I paid 1500 for it at the time. I do not regret it, although I am looking at the new Brother Dreamweaver-it has an 11" harp and uses a thumb drive to transfer images.

Has she looked at the Brother PE770? It's a great machine with capabilities that belie it's low price.

I also wouldn't count the floppies into the value of this. If this is a private sale verses a dealer than I would 1. check with a local dealer for cost of lessons, 2. actually test the machine out to make sure it works properly/see condition of machine, 3. private sale $900-$1000 range for a machine in good condition

I have 2 of this style machine. The first was purchased around 2003 new from a dealer for apr $4000. A couple of years ago I purchased a gently used Babylock that was made in 2003, private sale for $900.. This machine has a color screen, allows on screen editing/combining of designs and lettering. It has a large 6x10 embroidery area. It's true that floppies joined the dinosaurs as far as technology but Brother has software with a memory card that can be purchased and designs can be downloaded onto the card. The machine itself is very solid, sews everything from a knit to jeans and includes a ton of feet. This style of machine was on the market for apr. 4-5 years and manufactured by Brother and also made for Babylock. This is a good thing, the longer it's on the market with a huge volume sold than it's easier to get parts.

Even with the web, videos, chatrooms and the helpful folks here the only way a machine will be a good deal is if she uses it and sometimes nothing beats hands on in person help. I would check with a couple sewing stores what they have and support they offer.
