I'd like to make this dress (view A)
http://www.simplicity.com/p-8770-misses-plus-size-dresses.aspx#t-0
But do you think I'd be able to make it in cotton (I wanted to use Keepsake Calico from Joann's)? On the back, it says you can use lightweight linen or linen blends. Is there that much of a difference between the two (linen and cotton)?

Also, what material should I use for the lining?

Cotton is lighter than linen, but all in all I think it would be perfect for this dress. I have made summer skirts out of cottons. Just be sure to buy good cotton, not cheaper "craft cotton". The cheap crafting cottons will sometimes run color and be sure to wash your cottons before cutting out your dress. Good luck, and let us know how it all works out!

For lining you might use a cotton batiste. You will definitely want to wash your dress and liuning fabric and toss them into the dryer as well. Cotton shrinks. You'd hate tyo work hard and get a lovely result, only to find it several sizes too small after laundering.
