I saw your raq quilt picture and I LOVE the embroidery, but I am really nervous to try it!

How did you do it?

It was actually very easy, but I cheated and used my Bernina cutwork tool. Each block was set up in the software to machine embroider each block -- one at a time -- and then the cutwork tool did the slashing on each edge. After all the blocks were done, I just sewed them together.

I have not invested in cutwork yet, but that's an easy enough part to do myself

So you embroidered with all the quilt layers in there? Did you use batting?

Yes. I cut a square of flannel larger than my quilt hoop and hooped it wrong side up. Then placed a piece of batting cut a little larger than my embroidery design on top of the flannel in the center of the hoop. Then lay a second piece of flannel on top of the batting, right side up. You don't have to use 505 spray, because all the layers just naturally stick together. Next you just embroider your design and then you can cut your fringe on each block. You can find the instructions that I followed on the Bernina website. Just search for "cutwork quilt" and you should see the instructions for their Cutwork Rag Quilt. It's a fun project.

Thanks! I really love rag quilts, they go together so fast!

I love not having to sandwich a whole top, quilt, then bind and still get an awesome finished quilt.

Next question:
How well does it drape with a more detailed design quilted in?

It's definitely a little stiffer because of the embroidery designs in each block. Maybe you could skip the embroidery on every other block to make it softer. It definitely makes it a more cuddly quilt because it's made with flannel and gets really soft after it's washed.
