Remember, this whole thing started because we needed to cover ourselves up, and Saber Tooth Tigers have long since become extinct. But I remember when we'd need a winter coat. So my mother would go and buy a winter coat pattern. Then the fabric. Then make the coat.

But something got shifted for me. Buying, collecting patterns has become utterly satisfying IN ITSELF, whether or not I actually, ever MAKE the pattern. I love buying them. I love looking at them. I have actually fallen asleep in bed HOLDING patterns.

I have more patterns that I'll ever sew. But I buy more. I'm not dangerously out of control: I try not to pay more than $5 each. Also, it's my only vice besides drinking tea: I don't buy expensive jewelry and I don't use crystal meth. So maybe I spend $100 a year on patterns.

But I don't NEED them, and I'll never SEW all of them and I'm a little surprised by my lack of logic and control in all this. I don't usually get swept away (but I'd make an exception if Harrison Ford were willing).

Anyway, and I am not exaggerating: Yesterday, I was at sewingpatterns.com figuring out how many $2.99 Simplicity patterns I need to buy for them to average with shipping $5 each (the answer is: 4 patterns). At that exact moment, my sister called me. She was in Jo-anns a state away and they were having a 5 for $5 Simplicity sale. Eek! I only wanted 2 patterns. But like lightning, I came up with 3 more patterns (3 nearly identical gored skirts, whyIdon'tknow). She found them all. I could hardly believe they'd let her out of the store with them!

Now, is she going to mail them to me, or do I have to visit her to get them? We didn't iron this part out.

It's on my mind.

completely understandable. Its the day dreaming bit. The possibilities, the could I do this, I could do that....

Its similar to walking round a fabric shop looking at all the different options.

$100 a year? considering how easy it is to store patterns compared to fabric I dont see the problem. Its not like its going to get in the way of anything else important.

Besides, if it makes you happy that's the main thing. Other people need to spend a LOT more than that to get their happy fix.

Oh, and I sometimes go to sleep thinking sewing thoughts too - like what the next steps are for the project I'm working on.

Oh, I hit Joann's yesterday when they had the Simplicity sale; fell off the wagon again. I actually went through the drawers instead of the books and wound up with 12 patterns, which I then had to reduce by 2 (10 max). I rationalized...actually "needed" to get some smaller patterns for me (yay). Also, found a couple of costume patterns for my daughter, and a wheelchair/walker pouch pattern for my dad. Also ordered 3 Imagewear patterns and 2 My Image magazines. I WILL NOT, WILL NOT, WILL NOT get any more patterns for a while. Again, March was NOT a good month.

ETA: I love to reorganize my pattern stash...all the possibilities. Kind of like unopened gifts.

I often go to sleep thinking sewing thoughts, too...it's very Zen.

((as an aside, for next time...you don't need to pick 5 to get the 5 for $5 sale at JoAnn.))

I think I get this way with dress patterns. I can't really justify buying fifteen yards of fabric for a single project and yet I own patterns for no less than three dresses that require that much or more. It's like I choose the dress patterns for dresses I know I'll never need or ever have an excuse to wear...but just having the patterns is almost good enough.

I'll try anything once :)

Please excuse my typos...sometimes it is harder to go back and edit on mobile than it is worth!

About getting your patterns from your sister- here's a dreamy solution. Harrison Ford just happens to be in your sister's neighborhood and simultaneously has a do-gooder impulse. Without wasting a moment, he sweeps into your place and roguishly drops the patterns in your sewing space. Harrison gives you that irresistible lop sided grin and then realizes he has to visit me next. Somehow I wasn't actually thinking of patterns, although I often do. BTW, many thanks for the ones you sent me a while back!

Jeesh, we share so many sewing related whatever you want to call them.

Changma: WHICH Jo-Anns? I have tried to figure this every which way: the one in Staten Island, the one on Long Island, or the one near Montclair. Any way I'm looking at it: I'm travelling 4 hours before I arrive at a Jo-Anns!

Why can't Jo-Anns be in ... QUEENS?

there is some comfort in knowing others share your love of patterns. I usually have a stack next to my bed. I swear they come to me in my dreams.

You forgot the part where Harrison also offers me his mother's mint-condition Featherweight.

Y'know, if ya gonna dream...

Maybe an hour from you...Joann's on Old Country Road in Westbury. Although they told me there is a super-sized one in White Plains(?).
