I'm not fond of princess seams but it seems that every jacket pattern I like has them. I just don't have very good luck getting them to look nice. My latest jacket said to press the seam toward the center, no clipping. I initially did that and they looked terrible so I ended up clipping and pressing the SA open. Aren't they always supposed to be pressed open? Am I the only one that has problems with princess seams?

If you have access to Threads tutorials, have a look at the one called Princess Seams and Other Treacherous Curves. Apparently you have to be an Insider to view those now.

No.... they are not supposed to be pressed open. Leave a small allowance (1/2 inch) and press towards the center.

If you are have trouble with princess seams maybe the bust point isn't right.

Did you try pressing them towards the sides? I think I do that most often and especially if I am going to topstitch the seams.

I think it may depend on your fabric as to whether you should press open or press to the side (pressing to one side may not look as nice if the fabric is bulky.

I usually clip mine and press open on a ham. However, I have a small bust and am not dealing with much of a curve.
