I sewed up everything but the arm and neck finishing on a Colette Sorbetto top, and tried it on. The armholes feel tight.

The side seams had not precisely lined up at the arm opening. I think because I did the bust darts slightly wrong (but they look ok and the fit is ok). So those mistakes probably led to this smaller arm hole. Or maybe I'm super buff. I don't want to redo the darts.

Can I cut the armholes bigger? And if so, how would you recommend I do that?

Would it make sense to trim out a little crescent-y shape, under the arm, starting from the side seam? Not sure that makes sense as I described it. Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming you've tried it on before adding the binding? Don't forget that you'll trim a little bit off when you add the binding. Would this be enough to take care of the tightness?

If not, then trimming a crescent off where it feels the tightest should be just fine, assuming the fit everywhere else is good.

I love this top - one of the best freebies out there, imho! :)

Thanks! Yes, I tried it on before the binding. I didn't know the binding would trim some, too. I'll check before I cut. This is actually the first top I've ever made. :)

The fit everywhere else seems good. I cut it much longer than indicated, based on reviews here. I think I'd prefer the neckline a bit lower, but it fits as-is. I might try to trim it down a bit too, if I can do it without wrecking the pleat.

Thanks for your help!

Are you tall? If you are taller than average, or just have a long torso, you might need to lengthen it not just at the bottom but higher in the bodice. I regularly lengthen tops through the armholes which makes them fit my upper arms better too.

It could also be that the dart takeup threw it off a bit, or you just have buff arms. :)

Sandra Betzina talks about this alteration in Fast Fit, if you happen to have access to it.

Thanks LauraTS-- I'm not tall but you may be right about a longer torso. I'll keep an eye out for that in the next thing I make.

I'm having a hard time judging the sizes of things in woven fabric. I pretty much only wear stretchy things, so the woven pieces look Huge to me. I thought for sure I'd be swimming in this top. Joke's on me and my buff arms.

I just checked some of the reviews for this top and I know at least one other poster had problems with the armholes being too tight. I just printed off this pattern. Couldn't believe a simple top was 25 pages

Lower it a 1/4" at a time and try it on. If it calls for trimming the sas, do it before lowering the armhole. If it's a binding that gets sewn and turned to the inside than you won't be trimming the sas off. Before you trim anything make sure you know where it is tight. I have forward shoulders and I need to make the armhole larger at the front, not the underarm.
