I haven't posted in a while but I want to thank everyone here again who helped me decide on a machine. I went with the Janome JemGold 660 & it was the perfect choice since I wound up taking it to a real sewing class!

Anyway, my class just finished & although the teacher is going to offer another one in a month or so, she encouraged me to do things on my own. Although it was very much a beginner class, she taught us a lot of things that I would have never learned from the one & two day sessions at JoAnn ( I did take a couple there, but this class was at an independently owned fabric shop). I feel confident enough to do fairly simple things on my own so I am looking for recommendations on basic garments like simple T-shirts/knit tops & pull-on pants. I've looked up some things on the pattern reviews & narrowed down a few, but I'd appreciate any suggestions.

We didn't work on knits but I think I could handle knit fabric that isn't too thin or slippery. My job is in a temperature-controlled environment so I always wear pants, but I'd like to go a step up from the jeans I've been wearing all winter.

P.S. I'm especially interested in McCall's 6571 Palmer/Pletsch, which got good reviews from some advanced beginners. I love the look & the reviewers say it has great instructions.

What have you sewn successfully so far? What did your class cover?

Shorts, capris and simple sundresses are good to start with. Also cardigans are always nice to slip on, to chase off the A/C chill. I second with MaryMary. It would be easier to help with suggestions, if we knew what you worked on in your sewing class.

I did a basic pair of pull-on pants at JoAnn in addition to a couple of non-clothing items. Then with this class, our project was an apron but it had a number of different techniques involved - she said she chose it for that reason. It had interfacing, a non-gathered ruffle & facing at certain points so we learned how to attach curved pieces. We also did practice pieces to learn darts, inward & outward curves (clipping & notching), & the proper way to do corners.

If it helps, the other patterns I'd like to try are Simplicity It's So Easy 1852 & 2414 (pants/shorts) , Kwik Sew K3954 & K3928 (tunic tops). I'll probably try the Simplicity ones first since I've already made a similar sort of pant.

Thanks - everyone here is so helpful!

Try the Sorbetto top for a nice summer tank top.

Thanks! Just one more question: the one top is for knits only & aside from Polarfleece, I haven't sewed with knits yet. My teacher said that it's no more difficult to sew than woven fabrics. Is that true?
