Hi all! Maybe you can help me...I am having quite a time finding a nice, pretty border print cotton fabric for a 50's-style dress. It seems no one's making it anymore. I've checked JoAnn's, a local fabric warehouse, Fabric.com, FashionFabricsClub.com. and even MoodFabrics.com (which is beyond my budget anyway, but I was getting desperate). Nada. I googled "border print fabrics" and checked other sites as well. Still nothing but childish teddy bear and fairy prints. Only Fabrics Club has a black and white scallop print along the lines of what I'm looking for.... but this is to be a summer dress, so I want COLOR!

The prints I found that I DID like are, alas, only sold in small and/or expensive remnants of vintage material on Etsy or eBay. I need about 5 1/2 yards as the skirt of my dress will be very full. I'm not asking for too many specifics - the print can be almost any color combo. Just a good old fashioned, pretty floral fabric.

It can be a cotton blend (cotton sateen), crepe, or 100% cotton.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated!!

Where are you located? Near LA?

A member of another sewing website was just at the Mood Designer Fabric store in LA (can we say heaven???). She didn't mention price but found some very pretty fabric. Border is like a tulip garden in greens and pink while the rest of the fabric is white background with pink tulips scattered throughout.

I checked the mod website but didn't see it :(

Would an eyelet border do? Fabric Mart has a few in their embroidered section. They remind me of 50's dresses for hot summer days.

There is a striped rose border print on Etsy , seller is vintage4U,at $6. or so a yard. I'm thinking you could measure your pattern & make your own border with such a fabric by
cutting the stripes apart and adding it to your skirt as a border.
You won't need 5 yards, am thinking 2 perhaps?
Shouldn't be difficult.
Another suggestion is to place an ad here under the "wanted" section.

That's really pretty!! I tried clicking on the link but it said the page didn't exist. So I went to spoonflower.com and typed "floral border print" in their search bar but still didn't see this print. Maybe you could try reattaching the URL?

Thanks! :)

Nope, I'm on the opposite coast near NYC.There are, of course, a lot of fabric stores in Manhattan, but I'm still not familiar with where most of them are, and I wanted to see what I could find online and locally first. My preference was for vintage anyway, just to complete the retro look. That print you desrcibed sounds lovely though....

I did see that fabric, actually. Good idea about cutting between the stripes, but it's still on a dark background...

The dress pattern calls for 5+ yards since it has a very full skirt, AND it's cut on crossgrain.

I'll try the Wanted section- thanks :)
