Hi all!

I'm planning on draping a dress modeled after this one:

The only pattern I'll be using is a strapless, flared dress for the base layer; the rest I'm making up myself.

I'm using a lovely poly chiffon for the outer layer to recreate the flowy skirt and mock wrapping in front. My question is twofold:
1. I can't tell how many layers there are to Liz's skirt, I would assume a couple. The chiffon I'm using is printed, however, so I won't be able to double it up. Should I buy a solid white chiffon for going underneath or can I achieve the same look with one layer chiffon over a base layer of another fabric?
2. Should I make up the base layer in satin, and add a lining, or make the base layer out of a material that could double as a lining? The second option sounds better to me only because the first would mean three or so layers of three different fabrics- i.e. up to two layers chiffon + the satin + the lining!

I'm just not sure what fabric to use for a base-lining. I have this idea of a stretchy satin of some kind (expensive) or even a polyester knit. I don't have much experience with knits so I'd just as soon avoid it, but I'm open to any and all suggestions. :)

I think one layer of chiffon over a satin or something similar would be lovely. I would not use a poly knit. There are stretch satins.

I took the Sheers class here with Sarah Veblen- great! It got me thinking about the impact of color underneath a sheer. Now I don't assume a particular color is best and keep an open mind to what color under layer can enhance my sheer. I love going to a fabric store to lay out the sheer and put several alternatives underneath going across the width. You can compare and swap in new colors to find your favorite. For your under layer base cloth- maybe consider a stretch charmeuse?
