I tore up a pair knit pants and drew around with marker and added seam all around. how do I determine the grain line on the pattern?

Find the grain on the knit. Though it's not a woven, it will have vertical lines that you want to make your woven grain parallel to. If you can't see it, you may be able to feel it. Grab a handful of the knit, vertically, about where you think the true vertical should be. Only grab about four inches. Tug between your fingers and see how much it stretches. Now move your top fingers one way and your bottom the other, by about half inch. Tug again. Finally move them again so you've reversed the angled pull. Tug again. You want to find the place of least stretch (or none--but in a knit, least). You've found it when your diagonal tugs yield by the same amount. That "least stretch" is your grain. Make your new grain to line up with it.

Unless you don't like how the pants hung! But if you are copying, I'm guessing you like them.

Yes, thanks for the link! And for Lena, I am so pleased to have found your blog. Especially in light of my last fitting debacle.
