I have velvet/velour fabric from which I wish to make two drapery panels. The width, minus hem, will be the width of the fabric. They are 7 or 8 feet tall.

It would be most easy to just fold the selvedge over twice and sew for a side hem. But I think I remember hearing that you should always cut off the selvedges.

What do you think?

I think if you don't cut off the selvedge, the seams will not be smooth. The selvedge is woven more tightly than the fabric, especially velvet, and will not stretch over time while the velvet will. Sorry!

In custom workrooms the selvedges are always cut off before starting construction. They will pull, guarantee it.
