I am preparing to make a costume from the Capain America movie this summer, and the little bolero jacket has the cutest...some kind of sleeve! I really want to get this right because its adorable, and I would totally do this in other tops for funsies.

Any idea what this sleeve is called?

Maybe a gathered cap sleeve with one short partial inverted box pleat in the center hem of it? Or a puffed sleeve drawn in at the hem with centered folds and tucks. If you mean a more "fashion" term, I'm not sure. I think popular in the 40's and the 70's, but not so much now.

It's a type of puff or extended cap sleeve, but the bottom part of the sleeve has a dart or pleat instead of gathers.

This might help: http://sewchicpatterns.blogspot.com/2011/04/make-your-own-tulip-sleeve-tutorial.html

Also found this interesting little essay:
http://www.blogforbettersewing.com/2011/07/tulip-sleeves-yea-or-nay.html

I love the forties styles. If I still had a waist I'd sew a couple of those examples up!

To me it's more of a pleated puff sleeve. I think tulip sleeves overlap at the cap to give a flower petal look.

I don't think they are tulip sleeves, as there don't appear to be any overlap on any of them. I think it's a puff at the top, and fitted at the hem edge, a possible dart/tuck to narrow it in.

I think that it is a puff sleeve with a great deal of fullness in the cap, and the cap is pleated in, then the scallop is cut in the sleeve hem.

To draft the sleeve, try a regular, short, set-in sleeve that is the right girth around the arm, then extend the cap upwards and slash to add fullness for the pleated cap.
Sorry, I am sure that this explanation is as "clear as mud".
Good Luck!
Pam

It's still here in this not too old but discontinued New Look pattern for a knit dress, but I don't think you should use that exact knit sleeve pattern for a woven as won't stretch.

http://www.simplicity.com/p-2477-misses-dresses.aspx

Also sort of a variation of it, that is cut and made a bit different on this discontinued but still order-able Vouge Anna Sui throwback styled dress

http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1134-products-10652.php?page_id=939

Other than those, I think just kind of "not favored as in style these last few years" but if you look at lots of old 1970's patterns it had a come back then, and also maybe on some 1980's kind of Laura Ashley garments and maybe even in some of those 1980'sMcCalls issued out Laura Ashly garment patterns too.

Any puff or gathered sleeve pattern though that was cut straight on the sides of it and made to hang loose and full and gathered at the wrist, could turn into that sleeve though and real easy. Just cut it off any length you want, fold in half to mark the center of it, and put in one or a few pleats into it there on it's hem until it more fits your arm there or even more loose an open like your photo possibly.
