I thought for fun would compare the top 50 weight cotton threads we all have been talking about. I basically found them all to be the same price. All long staple Egyptian cotton. I think all/most are 2ply the ones I wasn't sure about I didn't list it.

Mettler silk finish 50 wt
547 yd spool $4.99 .009 per yard

Aurifil silk finish 50 wt 2ply
1422 yd spool $9.50 .006 per yard

Masterpiece #50 2 ply
600 yd spool $5.99 .009 per yard

Maderia Cotona 50 weight 2 ply
600 yd spool $5.99 .009 per yd

Presencia 50 weight 2 ply
547 yd spool $4.95 .009 per yard

Gutermann 50 weight
847 spool $$6.95 .007 per yd

Robison-Aton 50 weight
500 yd spool $3.75 .007

I thought it funny how everyone says Aurifil is so expensive actually it's the cheapest one listed. And I have seen it cheaper the $9.50 a spool. I just thought this was interesting.

Thanks qw - this is helpful, although I don't buy it by price or would use all Maxi-lock all the time! HAHAHHAA...no kidding - my machines like it well enough though it is linty and it quilts nicely. Hancock has Maxi-lock swirls on sale right now for 4.99 per 3000 yd. cone, and you can't beat that for decent thread. ;)

Maxi-lock 3000 yd 4.99 = 0.00166333 per yard

I'm partial to Aurifil as well. I'm piecing with some right now and it's the most beautiful color - a sort of azure blue...I love it.
I like Masterpiece too. They both have gorgeous colors.
Since Aurifil is the cheapest on your list I can rationalize buying more!

What a useful thing to do, thank you, Quiltingwolf. I am glad to see this.

I really, really, really want to try that Madeira cotton. I will try ordering it in a couple of weeks when presumably they will have it in stock. Some of those colors are just luscious.

Oh, man, I am so suggestible. This happens to me with food commercials, too!!!!!!

Oh I didn't buy all this just looking around online and comparing. In the last month I've brought some Aurifil, have some of the new Maderia cotton on order and also some 60 weight Mettler I got for $1.50 half of what it normally costs. I was just showing that all the "big" hitters are really the same price.

Have any of you tried this Isacord thread Leah Day has in her shop? I'm sure it's not the only place to get it, but I'm curious.

I have used Isocord on quilts where I really wanted the threadwork to show up. It was great for the look that I wanted.

I got mine from discount embroidery supply.

If you take shipping costs and JoAnn 40% of coupons into account that will change your equation. In that case Aurifil can become the same price as Mettler and Superior becomes the most expensive. 40% off coupon makes Gutterman cheapest of the ones you listed, but ConnectingThreads is still the cheapest. my LQS sells Aurifil for $12 a spool
