I am making a wedding dress that has a cowl neckline, and is entirely cut on the bias. The difficulty I am having is that she also wants it cut very low to the small of the back. I am unsure what to do about support in a dress like this. Adding a boned layer underneath was my first thought, but since it is cut on the bias with a drapey neckline, I think that would show through. Does anyone have any suggestions, is this just impossible?

Would making a boned underbodice with the same shaped back neckline, attaching the dress to it at the back neck as far as the shoulders only work? (A bit like a long line bra, but half joined to the dress. )

You would have to put a full layer underneath and potentially have a small piece of elastic at the back neck. You can see how I did this on a friend's dress as we left the leotard underneath exposed.

The dress has a full Kwik Sew leotard underneath with the front higher than the back. The elastic in the leotard holds the dress in place and amazingly it does not fall off the shoulders. It was made with the intention of having a body suit under it for ballroom Latin competition, but I think she has just added bra cups, which you would have to do for a much lower back.

Is this the Vogue pattern with the fishtail hem?

I had a very tall, slender bride, and the dress did go very well, but I lined it with a fitted non-bias bemberg lining, and it did go very low in the back, and she could not wear a bra. (I did put bra pads in the lining)
