I am using OOP McCalls 9146. It calls for a back zipper which I am changing to accommodate buttons. The skirt is almost a 3/4 circle skirt. How wide should I cut the placket? I will cut the back skirt on the fold and apply a continuous lap placket. Do I move the fold over to add to the width of the top of the back skirt?

I had a problem with another pattern when I did this and the skirt was too narrow for the bodice. I used to do this all the time for my daughters. Now, I am sewing for my granddaughter and this is not making sense to me.
Thanks, Mary

The placket should be wide enough at the waistline to accomodate two 1/4 inch seam allowances, one on each side AND double the width desired for the finished placket. It needs to be big enough to accomadate you button width with some additional spacing left and right. Claire Schaeffer's book has good info on how much space you should have for button placement. HTHs.
