Subject: Thread Overkill for swimwear/board shorts? Date: 4/19/13 8:21 PM

Joann is having a killer sale here in Southern CA (and elsewhere I suspect.) As I was dumping Vogue and McCall's patterns into my basket, I noticed Signature Sunstop Thread on sale - 50% off!

I am making Board Shorts, so I immediately snatched a few spools up, thinking this was the sort of thread I should be using for swim wear. It's "Specifically engineered for outdoor applications, polyester thread is waterproof with advanced UVR protection against fading." As I was driving home, it occurred to me that I've never heard of anyone on PR discussing specialty thread for swimwear. So maybe this impulse purchase was unnecessary? What do people normally use?

Luckily, I still have the receipt and Joann isn't too far away.

I used it when I made cushions for patio furniture from Sunbrella fabric.
When I make swimwear I normally use polyester thread.

One of the Jalie leotard patterns I have suggests sewing lycra with serger thread. Serger thread has more stretch.

Quick, bring it back and return it all.

Trade it in for real garment sewing thread instead. It's thick upholstery thread. Not made for garments and not only too big and heavy, but won't bend well in sewing your garment and to even use it, your needle would have to be so big it would be putting holes in your garment and also causing pulling and puckers on the garment you were sewing on. Of all garments to even try to sew with it, swimwear would be the very worst!

Thanks so much everyone! Looks like the verdict is Overkill, or maybe Thread ID Malfunction? I'm glad to hear that 100% polyester is the frequent choice. I've already got tons of that!

Do your stores actually take back thread? Any I've been in have a no return on thread policy.

I don't know, as I have actually never tried to return any thread, from anyplace.I also look real careful at any thread spool I grab from any thread racks though too, just because I know just looking at the writing on the rack, is not good enough. Since anyone could even accidentley put thread any old place, particular if it was in their hand, trying to match to some color of fabric prior. But I don't see why not they would/could not take it back either.

But, if bought at Joann's during a sale, and I returned it, while same sale still going on, and if in particular I did not ask for my money back at all and was just instead going to use that for something else there, (so they could not think I could ever write them a bad check and then get money for it, before they even found out it was bad- a fear stores have sometimes) and only wanted to trade it in for something else and I had not pulled the labels off the thread or unwound it, and also just said, whoops, your sale was so exciting to me (flatter them a bit), I grabbed the wrong thing, I do think they would do that for me.

Beauturbo and Geejay! You'll be happy to know that Joann's DID take the thread back and gave me a refund. Maybe because the thread was packaged in plastic and the spools were very clearly unopened? In any case, I am grateful for a happy ending to this misguided impulse buy. Thanks for all your help!
