So two weeks ago the Bernina 530was on the bernina Australia website and available here. Yesterday it was gone off the website and the Bernina dealer I visited did not have it listed at all, there was no price for it. What's going on?

The 550qe and 580 are still available but I don't want to pay an extra $1000 for the 550 for quilting stuff (like the free motion stitch regulator) that I will never use.
Are there no more garment sewers left so it didn't sell? Are they phasing out the 500 series? Any insights appreciated!

I don't think the 5 series are phasing out as it has only been a couple of years. I too noticed the 530 discontinued here on Australia an am not entirely sure why...
Maybe the sales weren't as good as the 550QE so they decided to discontinue the 530?
550QE is still a good sewing machine for garment sewing. you get the walking foot to help you sew knits easier, the BSR is not only for quilting you can use it for embelishments and other free-motion sewing work as well, and it comes with all necessary sewing feet liker the zipper foot, buttonhole foot etc.
So it's a machine that is not only designated to quilting.

Thanks for your opinions aka4512! Good to know that the 5 series is not going to be phased out.
I went to a Babylock dealer to check out the babylock Elizabeth - turn out no babylock sewing machines are sold in Australia either - only overlockers! Crazy! I guess we are not that big a market.

FWIW, the Baby Lock Elizabeth is the Brother NX-450 if that is sold down there. :)

I know what you mean about Babylock it's super annoying to great reviews and videos only to know they do not sell sewing machines... well the same sewing machines as the USA.
You would have to look at the equivalent to the Elizabeth which I beleiv is the new Brother innovis 610.
have you considered ebay for a used Bernina sewing machine?

Oh that is weird that the Brother's have equivalent Babylock models. I tested out the Brother Inno-vis NV410 and could not find a single review of it on here or anywhere else. Anyone know what the equivalent model is? I'd love to know. Here is the machine: link

Yes I have started looking for used Bernina's. I actually found this great Bernina Aurora 440QE on ebay today: link Does that looklike a good deal? But anyway the auction ends today and DH has said that we couldn't possibly afford it this month or next - and I'll be unemployed in 2 weeks time so I guess I'm just researching what I want for when we can afford it!

Thanks lelliebunny! Sadly it looks like the NX-450 is not sold here though. What is the connection between babylock and brother. Are they the same company?

From what I understand, Baby Lock contracts out their sewing machine manufacturing to Brother. Supposedly, Baby Lock has a higher standard than Brother, but they are essentially the same. At least that is what I have been told. I can't confirm with 100% certainty.

Yes, I've always heard that the 2 brands are built in the same factory. And that Baby Lock pulls machines off the line more frequently for quality inspection. But realistically I don't think you'll find much difference, except for the styling and that some Brothers come with Disney embroidery designs. At the higher end they'll all be terrific machines. I recommend a test drive so you'll know if you like the ergonomics. (I happen to dislike how far back the needle is set on my Ellisimo, but most adore theirs.)

You will either find a used machine like a nice 1530 for dress making or a 550 would also suite your needs well for new, as well as many other 5.5 mm Berninas. If you did buy a new 550 and found you did not use or want the bsr you could sell it, for around 400 US $/
You get the walking foot and that is a great thing to have and you would probably buy it anyway, that is around 180 US $ Taking these things into consideration the 550 would not cost that much more then the 530. But too bad really too bad if they are not available.
