If you have a pattern that you used, and while the product was fine, you don't feel the need or desire to make another one, what do you do with the pattern?

Ie, I bought certain patterns a few years ago, ended up not using them for their initial purpose, but I made something out of it. It was fine, but I don't have any desire to have another version of this in my wardrobe. Do you get rid of the pattern? Pass it on? Or hang on to it just in case?

2014 resolution: keep track of sewn yardage!! I'm subtracting fabric given away from my yardage in. Yeah!
In: 94.5 yards
Sewn: 73 yards

I'll try anything once :)

Please excuse my typos...sometimes it is harder to go back and edit on mobile than it is worth!

All of the above.

I have some patterns I never expect to sew. I enjoy looking at them and imagining a day when I might need a full length evening gown with a single shoulder strap and a two foot train or an authentic version of a Bolivian milkmaid's jacket.

Periodically (just last week, in fact) I go through my boxes of patterns and take out the ones that come under the categories

1. Been there, done that
2. What on earth possessed me to think I wanted to learn to a)smock b) make forty-eleven fine pleats c) take up downhill skiing?
3. What was great on a thirty year old body is not so good for a fifty-eight year old body.
4. Even my grandchildren are past that stage
5. HA! I'll never be that size again and it's not worth grading up/down
6. Yuck. Just Yuck.

I've quit fighting my inner demons. We're on the same side now.

It's just fabric; we can out-think it.

I recycle them. I don't have enough storage space for my fabric, let alone patterns that I'll never use again. I will often keep children's patterns though, in the thought that I might want to sew some early 2000's retro outfits for a future grandchild :)

If I'm sending someone something breakable, I'll wrap the pattern around it. Especially if the someone sews.

There is a charity thrift store near me that sells sewing "stuff" (books, patterns, fabric, notions, etc.). Most of the thrift stores I visit don't want to deal with sewing items, but this is a small store for a local charity, staffed by volunteers who are willing to sort and price sewing items.

I donate patterns there; it raises some money for the charity in question, and lets someone else get some use out of the pattern for a very reasonable price.

I rarely regret letting things go and I declutter a lot.

But there are quite a few patterns and sewing books that I regret giving away or selling. If I have any doubt, I keep it.

Having said that, I'm a lot pickier about what I buy now.

The ones I really will not use again I take to our local Salvation Army Store. It's a worthy cause.

They get taken to ASG meetings and given to whoever wants them.

If it has aspects that will not date then I keep it. If its a basic like tshirt, straight skirt, classic jacket you know the basics. They're all keepers. If its " in this year" then it's tossed next year..if I fall out of love or I'm just in manic clean out mode they go to the op shop..I never cut my patterns I trace off..it started when children were young and multi sized patterns got used on them till it ran out of sizes..so whoever buys my old patterns gets them all uncut.

I used to send them to Pattern Rescue (so wish they'd revive) but now I give them to a local fabric reuse group, at least the unused ones. No one seems to want cut patterns unless they're vintage and rare. ASG meetings or local sewing meetups are also a good idea. There's one local thrift store here that sells patterns so I suppose I could donate to them too.
