I am so dejected...I'm 55 and my monthly was coming less and less and I thought I was pretty much getting to the end. I didn't have a period for four months and it was heaven...well about or so weeks ago they started up again..This one was not as bad as previous and it lasted 10 days but I got through it. But guess what? I started again today.

Are there any of you out there that still have regular monthly cycles going into your mid to late 50's? All the women in my family have had hysterectomies so no one has experience natural menopause.....I really want this to end!

Well... any time. My sister is in your boat, so you are not alone. She just turned 55 and still has them now and then. She managed to go 8 months once and then start the cycle all over.

Talk to your doctor if you are concerned. Yeah, it is a real drag for them to hang on so long.

I went 4 months and started over. Then 8 months and started over. Then that was it. No more. I was so glad. I really enjoy not having cramps and so forth anymore. I am 57. However, I lost my great memory during and after meno. It is slowly coming back. I was really moody as well. I finally got over that part, but I sure wish my great memory would completely come back. What I miss is some of my sewing knowledge. I used to know how to do things and now it is like starting over.

Chances are you will not experience this. Some women do and others do not. I really hated the brain fog.

Hang in there, Deb. You time is coming. Just not soon enough.

I really enjoy quilting. I love to play with fabrics, colors and pictures. I recently discovered how much fun applique can be. As I love making pictures, landscape quilting can be challenging, but seeing the picture come to life is so rewarding.

That's very normal. I went seven or eight months once without periods, then they started up and soon disappeared again. It takes a few years for the whole thing to shut down. Relax and rest assured -- it WILL eventually end for good.

My doctor told me he had a patient that didn't start menopause till she was 60. Yikes!

My memory is OK (just some areas that aren't as sharp as they were), but there are certain abilities I used to take for granted that I can't trust myself on anymore. It's frustrating.

Seriously, Learn To Sew? I'm at least a decade away from menopause, but I hadn't been aware of this potential part of it. Is there anything one can do to prevent it, or lessen it at least, like gingko maybe? Other herbs/natural choices?

Oh Dear Lord in Heaven!

I am 50-1/2 and going through this. Two or three months - nothing. I figure it's done. Then back it comes, every month for a few more months. No other symptoms, though, never had a hot flash or anything like that.

I'm ready to get the show on the road and be done with this. I hate not knowing if I'm "done yet".

Oh, and PS... I also don't know many women in my age group who have gone through totally natural menopause and can tell me what to expect. Everyone I know has had hysterectomy or a Mirena or took BC pills or whatnot.

Official menopause is after 1 year of no periods. Peri-menopause is the horrible part with the crankiness, the messed up very long, very heavy and/or very close together periods. Hot flashes, night sweats and all the other nasty things. Unfortunately, peri-menopause can last up to 10 years. It was 8 years for me :(
Yes, I did it all natural with no hormone replacements etc.

Hitting menopause is better than peri, but still not all that great sometimes. Now I have trouble keeping the weight off, very dry skin, brittle hair and still have the occasional hot flash and night sweats. On the bright side no periods and cramping. Better, but not perfect.

I really hated the brain fog.

Mine wasn't as bad as yours. I didn't even know exactly how bad it was until I finally started HRT in desperation because of the progressive insomnia that was ruining the quality of my life. The fog lifted and I was, like, "Oh, wow!"

Deb - take my word, it can be a LOT worse than what you've described.
