I just picked up 2 yds. of a light weight linen look fabric from my hospital thrift shop & wonder what is it. Don't think its linen since it doesn't wrinkle. Did a burn test which left a very crumbly blackish edge, did not melt so not polyester, and a horrible smell. Thinking it may be a rayon blend? Any ideas? Gorgeous lavender color. Going to hand wash a square next.

Did you say it had a horrible smell? If so it wouldn't be a rayon blend. Rayon is a plant based fabric so generally not have a bad smell. Google burn test for fabric, there are several.

Maybe an acetate blend? It would smell sort of vinegar-y.

Yes, I did look at several resources including Sandra Betzina's fabric content page of "More Fabric Savvy" but am still stumped. It's not a vinegar smell nor burnt paper which indicates rayon. The swatch I hand washed did not shrink at all & pressed up nicely so I'm happy with that . It's 45" wide. Will probably make a simple shell.

Horrible smell like burning hair maybe? Isn't that silk or wool? (Never tried it; only read about it!)

Consider bamboo, it burns black, but the is a natural fiber , that I have no personal experience with, so I do not know what it smells like, however it does have a soft "hand".

hi, did the acetone test for acetate last night & nope it's not acetate. Am now thinking a blend of synthetic & natural fibers maybe. Thanks everyone for your input!
