Hi. I am a beginner attempting my first pattern. It is a lined sleep sack with a zipper for babies. I have completed the outer layer and the lining and am now trying to join them. The pattern says to turn the outer layer right-side out and put it into the lining (wrong-side out) with the zipper openings facing each other. It then says to, "pin the neck together and around the zipper, lining up the two raw edges of fabric. Carefully sew around the neck, pivot at the zipper and sew the layers together." This just doesn't seem right to me, but I can't even figure out another way to sew the two layers together around the zipper on the wrong-side of the lining. I would really appreciate any help at all!

Hmmm. That sounds wrong to me too. Surely your zip will be stuck facing the wrong way when you turn everything back the right way? Might it make more sense if the zip openings faced away from each other?
What pattern is it? Somebody else might have made it before.

Well I had no idea there was a pattern out there. I have made several and have pictures but can't post them until I am able to get to my computer but might be able to explain it.
I sew the shoulders together on both outer and lining
Right sides together join both out and lining at armpits and neck
To put the zipper in I lay sleepsack out right sides together place the zipper between the 2 front pieces facing inwards. When you eventually turn it right side out your zipper will be on the outside.
I usually baste my zipper and then turn to the outside just to be sure.
I don't sew any sides or bottom until I have put the zipper in. Not sure if this helps, it took me several hours of thinking and I mean thinking to figure it out.

Thanks for the replies. I had a really hard time visualizing how it would look when it was turned right-side out. I'm glad to know I was actually right. The pattern is the Stargaze sleep sack by loulou james creative studio on etsy. She has a couple other patterns for sleep sacks, too. I emailed the designer about my question. I'll add an update when I get her reply.

That is probably your best bet because she has the same instructions and can walk you through hopefully.

The designer got back to me - you're supposed to unzip the zipper, turn it so the teeth are towards to inside, then sew the lining around it. She even sent me pictures of each step. It worked perfectly and my sleep sack turned out great!
Thanks again for your help.

I had exactly the same issue with this pattern and I am not a beginner. I ended up doing it my way. It was really not explained well on the pattern and the drawings didn't help either. For something that should have been done in an hour - it took me more than 4
