We lost her 19 years ago today. I was looking though some old photos and found this one. I love this outfit. Don't know if it's a peplum or not. Just took a closer look, it's not a peplum.

I miss you Mama

Pretty outfit that she looks sharp wearing. I visited where my mother grew up and the cemetary Sunday (long drive) so have her on my mind as well. She didn't get to sew a lot as she seemed to get more than her responsibilities as caretaker for various members of her family and started her family of three in her forties. I still remember fondly her making me four summer sheath type dresses with different views when I was headed to a new high school and felt I was in dire need of something cute to wear.I was very impressed with her doing that as I think each dress cost like.50 in materials. A good mom is such a treasure to hold in your heart and remember. Thanks for sharing your mom's pretty picture.

Thanks JTink, for sharing the lovely picture and memories.

My Mama was 21 years old in 1948. In late 2011 I saw a photo album with many pictures of her from that time period....Oh the fashions, the furnishings, the beautiful smiles of her & her nursing student roommates! I saw my mother in a way that I never knew her.

Sadly, that album was taken along with everything else of my parents by my dad's caregiver after he died last year.

Actually, that's my mom in my avatar.

My mom was born in 1916, favorite (color!) photo of her is by the campfire in a beautiful green velvet jacket she made, holding my dad's dog when they were dating--with the WWII hairdos like your photos.
I do believe the waist-to-hip ratio was different in those days!-- thus they looked good in shirtwaists and nipped-in coats.
Remember Scarlett O'Hara begging to be cinched in another inch?
She didn't wear pants til much older. I wonder how many adopted Katherine Hepburn's famous pants back then?

Thank you all for your sweet words As a young girl, Mama wanted to be a fashion designer. Life took her down a different path.

Oceansew, isn't it amazing, that moment when we discover our mothers had a life unknown to us? I learned a lot about my Mama when I read her diary about a year ago. She wrote a lot in pencil, so some of it was illegible. Her diary only went on for about 2 years, but they were the formative years(15 or 16 years old), just before and during her courtship with my Daddy.

She looks beautiful and very kind. Lovely photo, thanks for sharing.

This is my first time in Vintage Sewing. I saw Mama and was curious. Glad I popped in.

Maia, when I saw this picture I couldn't help but wonder how many times since 1948, this style had been in fashion. I wish I had my Mama's longer waist line. Mine's under my armpits

Wouldn't it be interesting if we could start a thread with old pictures of our relatives in their "clothes of old"?
