Can anyone suggest patterns for an older woman who is an apple shape i.e. very little if any waistline definition and a tummy. I am normal weight. Measurements 39", 35", 41.

A shift that fits so that it skims over one's tummy along with an open jacket (it creates two strong vertical lines right down one's front) is comfortable and stylish.
You could style those lines any way you like - traditional business jacket, looser linen looks (think Eileen Fisher or J.Jill), etc. etc.

Those measurements don't sound too applely to me. LOL I thought apple-shaped was bigger in the waist than the bust or hips.
I could not see your link so just in answer to your question...I think you could look for styles or fabric blocking that gives more shape. Anything that defines a waist, whether it's with shaping or belting or clever use of fabric colors, I believe would look very nice on your shape.

My thoughts exactly not a true apple shape in my mind.
BTW is there a reference to the definition of Pear, apple and other shapes. I am wrong side of 70, 4'11 since I shrank and 37, 31, 40. What does that make me I wonder?
Must be others out there with this question?

I have the same problem. Always thought it was Apple but learned it was Box when I took Barb Decker's Plus Size Craftsy class.
What happens is even though my hips measure bigger they don't look bigger. Hip is wider at the side, not back or front, and it looks balanced from a front view because it is balanced with my shoulder width at the top. From the front view, you don't see an indented waist, it is more like a straight vertical line from shoulder to hip.
The waist, although smaller the hips, is all carried in the front just below the diphram and above the lower abdomen. It looks like an apple when viewed from the side because it protrudes beyond both the bust and the hips. But it looks like a box (relatively straight line) when viewed from the front.
Like suggested above, the vertical lines will help the eye when viewed from the side. I found wearing a lightweight blouse over a shell top worked for me. The blouse length hit just at my hip line or below. A length too short flared out from the belly. But a peplum style would work because the flare begins just below where the belly bulk ends (again, a straight line to mask the protusion).
I also found a Sandra B blouse pattern that has 4 waist darts in back and 2 waist darts on each side of CF.
I have a swayback so that offers a way to make the back adjustments. And I could let out the front darts to fit yet preserve the appearance of a shaped waist.
I wear my blouses unbuttoned over the shells or tees. I lost 30 lbs but the waist ratio is still there. I would like to drop 10 more but its been stable for 2 years now. We removed processed food from our house so when eating out with others or traveling, just even Chinese, I can see a waist increase of 2 inches before even seeing a weight gain of the same.

Thank you, your information is very helpful. I like the description "Box"-- whenever stylists show Rectangles they always seem to be skinny, and that's not my shape. I always look heavier than I am because of bone structure... short neck, wide & flaring OUT ribcage, high hip about as wide as the lower hip. My height is 5'5", and even when I was very ill and weighed less than 100 lbs, it didn't look like I had much of a waist indent. More than now, of course, but I really didn't look slender.
I've got several lengths of fabric and patterns pulled to start sewing for summer, will look at them with an eye to adjusting as you recommend. Nice to have your experience to draw upon.

I'm exactly the same proportions (though sadly a little bigger in each measurement. I'm working on it!).
two shapes I find work very well:
1. triangle - something that fits closely in shoulders/arms, flares out and ends at low hip (disguising high hip and tummy), worn with close fitting skirt or pants. This shape can also work in a dress. There are many patterms out with this shape right now. Even just a standard shirt/blouse that's angled out at the bottom works for me.
2. dolman. e.g. Burda 04-2011-119 http://sewing.patternreview.com/review/pattern/66981 This is someone else's review. I made this from a doubleknit and get complements on it every time I wear it. And so comfy. Mine is above the knee.

FWIW, the 'apple' concept is more of a medical one than a fashion/clothing fit one. Even if your waist is smaller than your bust/hips, if the ratio between them is less than a certain number (forget what), or the waist measure is over 35", it means you tend to carry fat in your middle, and are at higher risk for certain medical issues.
This is why I too meet the definition of 'apple', even though, like most who've commented on this thread, my waist is smaller than my bust.

enjoyed your post ever so much. I, too, thought I was a pear, but was so happy to hear that others are built like me too.. :-) I have so much trouble fitting my patterns to ME, not just a generic one. I have to enlarge all my waist patterns. Kind of like a pattern for my top, and another one for my hips, and another one for my waist. Seems like when I got old, I lost my waist somewhere. Someone told me that Colette patterns are good for gals like us.. what do you think? I find that shifts are good on me, and look nice...
