Hello all, I made Butterick B4443 view A, I followed all directions, no modifications and I tried it on at several points while making it. After putting the zipper in and getting the true fit, I have a very wide gaping at the top. It was there before but I thought putting the zipper on would pull it all together. I'm scared to take it apart because I am a true beginner so is there anything I can do to fix this? I was thinking about putting elastic along the top edge on the outside of the lining to try and tighten things up, will this work.

Have you tried to pin the seams a bit to see if just taking them in a bit would fix the problem.

As a side note if the pattern doesn't call for at least a waist stay you should add one anyway. I would also do a bust stay.

What do you mean by waist stay or bust stay?

You may have needed a smaller size for the shoulders an neck. I almost always have trouble with neckline gaping. I have to adjust the pattern before cutting. I am assuming that this is not a muslin and out of your good fabric? You can put darts in the back neckline-this will pull it up a little. I am not sure how much gaping. You might be able to do a little gathering at the neckline in the front-I haven't made that pattern so I am not sure but it looks like that might look ok.
It would be similar to Simplicity
That might not work. Do you have a picture?

I don't have a picture, it was suppose to be the muslin, I thought with the fabric I bought that it would probably be something I wouldn't want to wear, but now that it's finished, I actually like it. I think I phrased my problem wrong, it's strapless and at the top it has gaping because physically I don't fill out the top like I should. I was looking for a technique that I could try to get the top of the dress to lay flat against my body. I'm going to try the bust stay. Thanks for everyone's help.

Here is a direct link to the dress for viewing and commenting.

Surprised there is no added support to help hold up the dress with or without substantial "ta-tas".

Would enhancement of the under garment or wearing a different garment (whatever young ladies are wearing these days) help with the fit?

Other things to consider when fitting - wear the same foundation garments and shoes (if length will need consideration) as will be worn with the finished garment.

Don't be afraid to rip and resew. It can be very worthwhile. We have and still do.

If all else fails, i'm not above wearing something super padded to help fill it out. Thanks again for the help.

Lol! Did you stay stitch before you did the neckline? I know some people only stay stitch on curves but I find it helps to keep things from stretching out of shape if you are going to try things on a lot. I always regret not doing it if I forget. I had this problem with a recent blouse that resulted in a slight gaping at the back neck. I found a tip on Burdastyle to gather the facing only with a running stitch and that helped pulled things in. If you search Burdastyle there is also some info about casing a piece of elastic.
