I tried on a simple top that had batwing sleeves. Since I am a pear shape I assumed that it would be shapeless on me. I was quite surprised how good it looked and how comfortable it was. Is this type of shirt going to be around for awhile????

From my memory, batwing/dolman sleeves have been around since in the 80's
I wore them then and now much older, I find them very comfortable, plus few fitting problems.

I copied a RTW top, with a higher cut Dolman sleeve. The top works really well in a soft knit, like poly/viscose or viscose/lycra or fine cotton knit.
I found the key to the look was the higher cut underarm, to balance/elongate my upper body.

Sandra Betzina was wearing one in her online class. It really made me consider making one.

See the front pear in this pic: Pears . . . that's me. I adore the dolman sleeve because it gives my upper part some width without bulk and I can still have an obvious waistline. I look more hourglass shaped.

I think it's like any other version of sleeve - some of the tops are stylish and current, but if you get one that's wrong for you, it can look worse than frumpy.

From what I see "batwing" can mean anything from a dolman that is loose from shoulder to elbow, and tighter from elbow down, to a modified kimono/kaftan where side seams are sewn wrong sides together and the "seam allowance" is allowed to remain, to an extra wide bell sleeve (or extra long flutter sleeve).

I have always avoided such clothing, but you all have encouraged me and now the question is: What patterns????

I made one just last spring from a free pattern on Burda Style. It has since disappeared from the website. It is one of most comfortable tops I've made and has a V neck. Anyone know where it went?

Cations Designs has kindly shared a free download of her Dolman Sleeve top. Cation Designs top, is very similar to the shape of the pattern I use - originally copied from a RTW top.
Having thicker thighs and legs in comparison to my upper body, I prefer the narrow sleeves - avoiding wide sleeves ending at my hip/thigh line.

Thanks for the top and suggestion of the narrower sleeves. For now I will probably wear something over them such as a sweater or jacket. Something I am going to experiment with. I am thinking I need to pull out my Burda mags and see if they have anything I might use to play with.
