I'm looking for a patio dress pattern. (You might call the dress I want to make a muumuu or a lounge dress or a Mexican dress.) Over the years I've had several of these cotton dresses and worn them out. This spring I thought I'd make a couple to wear during the summer heat. But I can't find a pattern I like. In fact, I can't find any pattern at all. I've checked the major pattern companies. Any suggestions?

We have the same thought. I also was looking for a patio dress pattern and found a Butterick 6838, which is a nightgown pattern that is easy, fast and has worked great for me as some of the other patterns use too much fabric on a petite frame.

Good luck

Thank you-- that should work. I am also petite and don't want to carry around five yards of fabric! Plus, I can always use the pattern to make an actual nightgown.

There are so many "maxi dresses" out right now. Check the Project Runway and Fashion Star patterns. Also there are lots of this style out by Simplicity right now and each pattern has several options.

McCall's 6559, a Best Pattern of 2012 at PR, at this link, is very popular. I have not sewn it but I do have the pattern which I bought after reading all of the highly favorable reviews.

And McCalls patterns will be on sale next week at JoAnn's for $1.99.

Good luck finding something you like.

There are lots of rave reviews of the Jamie Christina Mission Maxi, so that's another to check out.

Are you looking for a long or knee-length pattern? I bought McCall's 5659 last summer when we were experiencing weeks of 100+ temperatures.

Thanks-- I will check this one out too, since I am looking for knee-length.

Thanks to all of you for your help. I've got a couple of good possibilities now, so if my work load ever slacks off enough for me to get out the sewing machine, I should be ready to go. BTW, love the maxis on you tall, thin people, but for short, round people like me, not so much!
