I want to make a shirt that is similar to a RTW shirt I already have. Butterick's See and Sew B5480view A is really close to what I want and I've made a couple of test shirts.

So the neckline is too big. On my first top I just reduced the elastic by about 4 inches. It looks pretty good. On my second shirt I'm adding a ruffle at the neckline and once I add the elastic, it starts to look like a clown ruff. So I'd like to reduce the original width of the neckline.

I'm making a large. All together the 4 pieces add up to about a 78 inches. About 18" in each sleeve, 18" for the back and 22" for the front give or take a bit. I'd like to get the neckline down to about 60" before the elastic but I can't lose the fullness in the chest area. I thought I'd try removing about 6" from each shoulder, 4" from the front and 2" from the back by folding a dart or two in the pattern pieces and cutting them like that. Would that work?

I think it would work, just end the darts under the flounce.

Are you trying to make the neckhole smaller/closer to your neck, or reduce the fullness of the entire shirt?

Make the neckhole smaller and closer to my neck. I don't want to reduce the fullness of the whole shirt, it would be too small in the bust.

Then you will need to add fabric filling in the neckline. The only real fitting point on this style is where the bottom of the arm hole sits. If you want a closer neckline, adding additional fabric to the top of the sleeves and the front and back will be necessary. Nothing difficult, just add the amount you would like to raise the neckline to the top of each piece, continuing the angle of the raglan sleeves.

I took my muslin apart last night and tried putting darts in. After sewing everything back together the ruffle looked better, but the neck was too big. I pretty much came to the conclusion that I would have to try exactly what you just suggested.

I'll be cutting a new muslin. I hope I still like this pattern when I finally perfect it
