I am trying to do some decorative stitching on a lightweight cotton. I have tried no stabilizer, interfacing, interfacing + stabilizer, but the pattern is still distorted. I have tried to do the pattern adjustment suggested in the manual (page 114), but no matter how I move the adjustment dial, the test (darning) stitch pattern does not change (high on right).

Any ideas?

I presume you are turning that small dial that is between the machine and the acessories holder on the front of your machine.
I found that the dial needed to be turned all the way before seeing a difference in the sewing on my machine. Just turning it a little bit made no difference..
Are you using bobbin thread in the bobbin and embroidery thread on the top?
Also, try turning the foot height dial on the top of your machine.
If the foot is too high or too low, it could make a difference in the way the fabric feeds under the foot.

Yes, I am using the dial where you have to move the accessories holder to get to. I've turned it all the way, but makes absolutely no difference. I'm using all purpose thread in both the needle and bobbin. I've also tried various thread tension adjustments, but that doesn't help either. I will try adjusting the foot presure and see if that makes a difference.

Try and change the needle too. Sometimes they can be faulty even new out of the box.
