Hey all!

I'm making Gertie's fab Butterick 5882 dress for a friend's wedding, and I've already purchased this fabric for the main portion of the dress:

I'm having trouble figuring out what fabric to use for the contrast shelf bust portion and straps. I was thinking I would probably get some satin or shantung, but can't decide what will look good color-wise. My favorite colors are teal and dark purple, but I don't know that either will look right with the metallic silver/ivory. Should I just go black and call it a day?

Suggestions, please! :)

Is that grey that I see? If not, how about picking up something like Casa Satin(Joanns) in a deeper green as a contrast?

If I wanted it to look "formal" I wouldn't do a contrasting color, but would use the same fabric for the whole dress. Otherwise, I'd probably stick with a silvery grey. But that's me. I'm big on neutrals and very classic profiles.

I agree that for a more formal look, I'd try to match the silver (or maybe go a step darker). Matching the lighter color would also work (can't tell if it's white or pale grey).

However, if you want it to be more fun (or shocking, lol), I think you could probably go with any color you want! Either way, I'd look for a solid.

What would look best IMO, is a metallic that is about the same saturation level as the silver - so if you can find a metallic teal or purple, go for it. Cool tones would probably work better than warm (so emerald before sage, if you want green). Although a more blue-based red would look good.

(If the sheen on the fabric is not metallic, just match whatever the sheen on the fabric really is, satiny, gauzy, whatever.)

A really pale "cool" pink would look pretty, and wouldn't even need to be shiny.

I would go with black.

I take it you're wearing this? In that case, I'd suggest red. And maybe some red shoes, too. Or if you're going formal, I'd suggest black velvet or velveteen with black shoes and white pearls.

If you want something timeless I would suggest a gunmetal grey or deep purple. Having said that, the red Butterick dress (5814) you made looks amazing on you, so if you have any leftover red fabric, play with that. I didn't help very much, did I?

in the left hand corner of the picture i see the back side of the fabric. silver on white. that would make a nice contrast w/o being too obvious.

ConnieBJ - Thank you! :)

Thanks! Yes, making it for me. I think you guys are right - either something to match the silver or the background (ivory or so) would probably be the best look!

Or red. Or black. I still have a little time to decide :P Well, not so much. In true procrastinator fashion, this needs to be done by next Wednesday...

Thanks for all of your input! :)
