I've been seriously thinking about a Babylock Symphony or the Laura Ashley, and went to see and try out the Laura Ashley today. I wasn't really impressed with the stitch quality. The straight stitch had slanted stitches, and a few of the decorative stitches didn't look right either. The person helping me kept saying it was because of the cheap fabric we were sewing on or that the needle needed changing. She changed the needle and it did the same thing! It also made a whizzing kind of noise, not terribly loud, but there. I've sewn on the Symphony and don't remember that sound, although I was at a sewing expo, so the noise in the auditorium might have drowned that out!

Was this machine a good representation? Is that just how they are? There are many other features that really appeal to me, but not if the stitches don't look good!

Cheap fabric?! We don't use expensive fabric as demo cloth but no matter the cost they shouldn't be using fabric that makes the stitches look bad! On the other hand it could be telling - what if your sewing specialty is on things using "cheap" fabric?

I will say I have seen stitches slightly slant or torque on fabrics with a diagonal twill weave on more than one machine. I have new respect for that weave! Best thing to do is bring in samples of fabrics, projects that represent what YOU will be sewing on.

I don't know anyone who's bought the Laura Ashley who didn't like it, one customer traded hers to upgrade and ended up coming back to buy another! But we all have different preferences, just find out what yours are with your own fabric :)

I have a few friends with the Laura Ashley and they LOVE it. Personally, I didn't like the feel of the machine while it stitched.

Machines are personal, pick the one you like best. Can you try the Symphony again?

I have had this machine for 6 months now. It is awesome. There is a simple process to adjust settings. That one sounds out of whack. I set mine (only slightly) when I first got it. It hasn't needed it since. Buy it from a reputable shop who will give you free training. Basically you sew the circle button. If it doesn't look perfect, you adjust it with a touch of a button, then sew it again. Once you get a beautiful circle, it is set. Very simple. It took me two circles.

On the cons -- I didn't care for the brother quarter inch foot. I purcased a Janome foot and solved that. It does make an engine noise on the first stitch. If you start with the needle down it does not do it. I asked my trainer (a certified Brother, Bernina, Janome repairman), and he said the noise was normal and not to worry about it. All in all, it was quieter than the Viking and Bernina I tested!
