HI,
I have a Bernina 830 that is over 35 years old. I love it and it is in the shop! I am paying to get it fixed, cause a new/old one is twice as much! I am looking to get a second machine though. Do not like not having one! Need to decide if a used older one would be better than a newer bells and whistles one. I do a lot of flannel quilting, sewing purses with denim and screening, so need one that can handle the thickness. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Toodles,

Laura

I have a Pfaff Select that I use for purses and home dec. It's a mechanical machine and can handle thick fabrics and layers. I've made several screen projects with too. It also has IDT which is like a built in walking foot. I love it for inserting cording, which you can't do with a regular walking foot.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

Hi,

If you can find yourself a Singer 15-91 in good shape, it would be a great second machine. I too have an old Bernina 830 that I love and use for all my garment construction, but I use the 15-91 for all of my home dec and quilting. There is a great $25 walking foot that you can buy that works like a charm for multiple layers and it sews through everything with ease. I have even repaired my son's leather shoes with it, and yet I wouldn't hesitate to also sew clothing on it if my Bernina was in the shop. You can see a picture of mine here -

I lucked out and found this beauty at a retirement home garage sale 25 years ago - for $40!

I vote for the mechanical Pfaff with UDT.

Candace, you sure have a beauty there! The fact they come in such nice solid wood cabinets is a huge bonus. My modern machine does not have a flush-mount cabinet and to buy one of comparable quality (solid and wood) would be at least a grand. These old machines are such treasures.

There are so many options out there. After 35 years with the 830 you should treat yourself to a bit of a research extravaganza
And go to several dealers tell them your budget and purpose bring your own fabrics with you and do some exploring. Have fun!

For the price (under $100) you can't go wrong with a vintage 15-91. It will quickly pay for itself even if it is only your 2nd machine. It takes regular low shank presser feet, regular needles and Class 15 bobbins so no worries about finding parts you need. Its heavy duty and will sew through almost anything. Mine has been in use since 1954 and never ONCE been in the repair shop!

PS...nothing, but nothing, beats a vintage Singer with a buttonholer attachment for buttonholes. Its worth having one for that reason alone!

Thanks all! Have been checking out ebay and craigslist, plus putting the word out. My Bernina should be back from the shop, maybe next week. It was a problem with the feed dog assembly. Of course you really miss something when you don't have it!
Keep the suggestions coming!

Found this one on craigslist!

Asked about the model number, he is unsure. Is there a specific place to look?
