I am researching to get a new emb machine, and frequently read that besides the capital cost of the emb mc itself, cost of thread and stabiliser is another major item to make provision for.

Some of better emb threads available here are Mettler ( USD 3 for a 200 m spool) and Madeira (USD $6.50 for a 2500m cone).

If I calculate the per m rate, the Madeira Cones are a 'better value' buy. But if I need to get say 40 colours , then the cost will be USD 120 for Mettler and USD USD 260 for Madeira.

When buying emb threads, what size spool do you buy ?

There is a set of 80 Madeira 220m rayon spools that can be bought for about $100 USD... that would probably be a good place to start. They also have another set that is 40 1100m spools for the same price.

I have some 220m spools that I've had for years and they haven't run out (though admittedly I don't do a "ton" of embroidery). You will tend to run out of colors you use the most (black, white, anything else you tend to use a lot), and it would make sense to get larger cones of that, but I don't know that I would invest in massive amounts of thread just starting out. A lot of people suggest just buying the colors you need as you need them - you'll be surprised at how quickly they collect, and you'll get a better sense of what you tend to use more.

The Madeira cones had to be ordered through the dealer, while the Mettler spools are readily available from the quilt shop. I think it make sense to just order a few cones of the primary colours Madeira cones and just pick up the odd spools of Mettler for specific projects.

I don't do much embroidery, but I like the 1100 yard spools.

I prefer the 1000m spools for embroidery. It's easier to get a larger range of colors and lasts for a long time when using for small areas within a design to create shading. For basic colors: white, black, red, gold, green and light/dark brown I purchased 5000m spools through a local store. Prior to investing a huge $$ in any 1 brand get a few spools to try what your embroidery machine will like. Just because mine loves brand x dosn't mean it'll be the same for your machine.

I was at a sewing machine shop yesterday and found a set of Brother emb thread, 40 x 300 m spools priced at USD 100, seems a good buy. Already 'file' this 'intel' with my notes on emb machine research for future reference.

You might also want to try researching Metro embroidery thread. Here is the link to their website. You can purchase an entire 166 spool set for only $125. That is less than $1 per spool and they come in 1000m spools. I assume you're not in the USA, but Metro does ship internationally. It is a great polyester thread and I've been using it for over a year. If you search the boards here, you will see many positive reviews for this thread.

If you're looking for a good deal on Madeira thread, you can go to All Stitch for great prices. 1000m polyester spools run $2.65 and rayon is $3.15.

I hope this helps!

Thread will be wound onto the spools either parallel or cross-wound.

Either is fine, just take note of how you are putting it on the machine.

The cross-wound feeds from the spool more freely and with fewer hang-ups if it is placed on a thread stand so the thread feeds upward from the spool.
