I traced a jeans pattern cut to medium and needed the waist and hip area a little larger so I cut the fabric from the waist to the crotch area larger than what I needed. Would it be unreasonable to seperate the seams at the outside leg seam and restitch with a larger seam allowance in that length of waist to crotch without seriously distorting other areas of the garmet.

There is a point that you can't adjust at the side seams without distortion how much depends on the cut of the pattern. You will generally be safe with about 1/2 inch change in seams.
