Hi- I want to make a simple no-collar no-button coat and I cannot seem to find one. I have found several jackets with that style and structure, but I can't remember what the formula for converting a jacket to a coat is does anyone recall that post? Or does anyone just know how to, do that? I know it is more than simply lengthening the jacket.
thanks so much for your help!

I don't know the post, but according to Make Your Own Dress Patterns by Adele Margolis, to convert a jacket bodice pattern to a coat bodice, you would drop the neckline by 1/8", add 1/4" ease to the side seams, and lower the armhole by 1/2". To convert jacket sleeves to coat sleeves: add 1/4" to the side seams, raise the underarm curve 1/2", and redraw the sleeve cap (compare length of new sleeve cap with coat armhole and allow 2-2.5" of ease). Hope this helps.

Is this close to what you are looking for? Vogue 8626

It has a no collar version. Yes buttons, but it's easy to leave those off and get rid of the overlap. Maybe it has too much action in the back for the simple coat you imagine?

I have another pattern: B5569

This one is simpler in back, and you should be able to leave off the collar, especially if you have a collar-less jacket or coat pattern to borrow the neckline from if you don't like the shape of this one.

Finally, I have this: B5262

No one has tried this pattern. I did find one image of it sewn up online and it's not as hideous as the line drawings would indicate, but it would have to fit just right, be of stunning fabric, not have that odd sleeve detail on the cuff, and be a better length to have a chance. What it does have going for it is simplicity and that raglan shape, if that appeals.

I'd be interested to see the jackets with the shape you are going for. I would never have thought of making all those adjustments to turn a jacket into a coat, I would just have lengthened it! Shows what I know! Although in my defense, there are many patterns in my stash, including the 2 Butterick ones above, that claim to be Jacket/Coat patterns and the coat is just a lengthened version of the jacket, so that may be where I got the notion that's all you had to do.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your help! Nancy, I think your info was what I was looking for, but those added dimensions seem so minor, don't they? But as I recall, they were tiny but significant changes.

Because I can't go back to original post without losing all of the text to this reply and having to start over, I am sorry I didn't write down our name, but to the woman who posted the pattern suggestions, thank you so much. If I knew ho to remove the collar of that second one , I would do it! But as it is, I think I will try to lengthen one of these "Chanel-like" jacket patterns.

I'll let you know how it goes!!

It's funny, but in garment sewing even a change of just 1/8" in a couple of seamlines can make all the difference. Good luck with the coat.

Sarah Veblen's fitting photo book also has a chart showing how to scale up from shirt to jacket and then from jacket to coat.

Do you happen to know what page that's on? I just flipped through Sarah's book and didn't see it.
