Somehow I have managed to run out of fabric for mockups! In the past I've bought bolts of muslin on sale at J/A, but even their sale prices can add up. And all of my stash at the moment is too nice to sacrifice for test fitting. Has anyone here seen any great buys on muslin or other mockup-suitable fabrics? Any of those fabulous $1/yard deals, maybe? I have all the sales flyers for JA/Hancock/etc Memorial Day sales, but so far I'm only seeing muslin 25% off at Hancock. I'm hoping I can do better!

Thanks!!

I use bedsheets from the thrift store. King sheet on 50% off day = $2-3.

I agree - bedsheets and pillow cases (almost a yard) from Goodwill. Even curtains.

As for actual yardage, does your Walmart have fabric? Sometimes there is fabric there for $2/yd or less, especially off-season (flannel right now). Walmart is the only place I've ever gotten $1/yd fabric!

Hobby Lobby has broadcloth for ~$3/yd. Nice enough to turn into lining or wearable muslin. And their sale rack has occasional gems in all weights (usually some nice calicos and a few choices of cotton duck or fleece). Sale rack prices are rarely more than $5/yd, usually $3-4.

I either wait for a 50% coupon from JoAnn, and buy the Roc-Lon 45" muslin from the store (reg. $3.99/yd), or if there's a 50% off coupon for online, it's only $2.99 regularly (I don't think I live in an expensive fabric market...I'm in the midwest) and if I purchase enough yardage, it's cheaper with shipping than going to the store.

Or, I have also bought the crappy value fashion fabric from Hancock to use for muslins. One time, the woman cutting my fabric looked at me like I was nuts when I told her (she asked) that I was going to use it for muslining...It was only $1/yd, so her reaction seemed pretty odd to me.

Another bedsheet gal here. The thrift store employees look at me funny sometimes because they have started to recognise me. I bet they're wondering what on earth someone is doing buying all the ugliest, most faded eighties-style sheets they have (those are only 50 cents!)

Would the soil separator cloth from Lowe's or Home Depot suit your needs? It doesn't drape exactly like fabric but it has worked for me to get me to where it's not a waste to cut the good stuff, and it's only 30 cents a yard when you buy a roll.

Plumbing department, also called trench liner, comes in different widths--I was able to get it a yard or wider. I love it.

See-through-ish so you can use it later to guide motif placement when cutting. To mark it, I've learned from ladies here to use pencil, and do it where you won't mark through. For labels, put tape or package labels and write on that . . .

Do you have a Home Fabrics? I have seen fabric there that is similar to muslin. Can't remember if it was $1 a yard or $1.50. It is worth a look if you have a store nearby.

The soil separator stuff is cheap but it's like sewing wet tissue paper sometimes. That doesn't keep me from using it in a pinch, but I don't think it hangs like fabric - not that muslin hangs like every fashion fabric out there.

I found muslin drying up- no good prices anymore. I do watch the Internet sales and buy a similar type- no matter how awful it looks for muslins.
Also wandered into Goodwill by the pound! Really cheap. Again look just for the weight of knit or woven in sizes large enough for me to cut pattern mock up. Lots of extra large sized now a days so not hard.
