Has anyone ever gone to a TOGA event ... treadle on ... ?? I had not heard of them til recently & am thinking of going in July...( keeping fingers crossed I can drive by then...). Did you enjoy going? Did you take any of the sm tune-up classes ? ... Just wondered what you thought & if you liked the event.
thanks so much for input..

To add; Thinking of taking Martha FW as I think I can carry her if I got to sm tune-up ... Martha loves attention ya know..

I've been to three - two in Seattle and one in Minnesota. All were a lot of fun, and the two I attended without my family in tow were best! I took a machine to one in Seattle - a small handcrank that I took as carry-on and fit under the seat in front of me. If you cannot take your own machine, there are always lots there provided by the locals who are within driving distance, who fill their cars/vans/trucks with as many machines as will fit. Some machines are for sale, some to be serviced/rehabbed, and some are just to show off.

There were no formal classes at the ones I attended, although folks like to gather around whenever an particularly interesting demo is happening. I demo'd FM quilting on a 3/4 sized Singer treadle once, and another time, I helped a gal from California get her 19th century German High Arm machine sewing. Others show off specific quilting or sewing techniques, or accessories/attachments. There is always lots of food, often dinners out, as well as potlucks and communally prepped banquets, although the particulars vary by event.

If you take Martha, I'm sure you will get lots of help to get her sewing optimally, whether there is a planned class or not. Lots of TO folks just love to get their fingers on any kind of old black sewing machine!

Been to several over the years, including the 10th anniversary in Seattle. More fun than a barrel of monkeys! If you love people powered machines, you won't be sorry. There will be someone there who knows every obscure thing you want to know about just about any machine you ever run across. Don't miss it!

Been to a couple. The people are pretty much what you see on list.

Yes. I go to the Lancaster (County, PA) TOGA nearly every year--didn't make it last year. And there's a NOVA (Northern Virginia) TOGA that's a one day event, in late April, every year too. Missed it this year after I had a basement flood.

I love going to TOGA, but we've never had the sm tune-up classes at ours.

Is this a secret society? What is it?

Treadle On Group ... that is the part I was told.. not sure what the A is for. It is a large gathering of people who go & talk older sm, sewing, fabrics , sm maintenance..... that is what I was told. ... At this particular gathering is near a farm historical site & so you can also take in the buildings there if you like. This one is a 2 day event you can go to both days or one or the other. Bring your own lunch to this one as food vendors are usually not there. I am not sure how it is at other ones if there may be food vendors or not.
Hope this helps.... I am gathering info too... I just heard about it a week ago!

Thanks everyone for all the great info!

TOGA basically means "Treadle On GAthering". It is an email group of people powered sewing machine enthusiasts that work to promote, keep working and share a love of these machines.

Most of the gatherings are held at people's homes, but I don't go to the really big ones (WA and NC), so YMMV, and people coordinate them in different ways. Some are 1 day, some are longer. Some do pot lucks, some have no food, some provide food with help from other members that show up before hand, some have lunch with shopping trips to a fabric store if I remember correctly.

In the past, there has been paper piecing demos, different machines that are rare and unusual on display/for sale and the Pony express going on its next leg (the members help move machines across the country for other members).

Graham Forsdyke helped me troubleshoot and repair my machine at one of these events.

In the end, it's more along the lines of the PR events then an actual Big Thing (unless you are into it). Mostly everyone is pretty tight knit and it's like going to a sewing circle of friends with the same machine you have and no one puts you down for your love of them.

The majority of members quilt on their machines, a few of us garment make along with it (there's only one or two that do only garment making), and so the gatherings focus on techniques for that. I imagine that if one of the garment makers wanted to, they could demo clothing but I don't think they go to the TOGAs all that often.

It's very relaxed and a chance for the members to do what they do on the list in person.
