Probably not. The latest I've seen with metal gears in a Touch & Sew was in a 603. I don't think there was a definite cutoff though--it seems like Singer switched to nylon gears as they ran out of metal.

Thanks Joe! The lady wants a pretty penny for it anyway.

I think some do and some don't. So I think you actually have to look to tell. I believe I had 3 in front of me, all at the same time once. I did look. 1 did and 2 did not. So they are not always the same, even if they all say Singer 626 on them. I could not tell from just looking at the outside of them at all. I can tell without looking, if the hook gear is falling apart by the hook not turning, and just only the crunchy feel of the fly wheel then in my hand, but if all gears are intact and working then I could not tell by just my hand on the fly wheel at all. And would have to look.

My 626 did not have metal gears.

My Mother in Law gave me hers when she could no longer sew due to Alzheimers. It did have metal gears and was a fine machine. I learned on a Touch and Sew and it was terrible, so I was reluctant to even let this in the house. This one was great.

I have one of these, had it since the early 70's, and it does have metal gears. I don't think it could have lasted this long, with all I put through it if it had plastic.

One is for sale locally here at a thrift store. If I buy it, whats the easiest way to tell if it has metal gears?
I turned the hand wheel and it turns pretty smoothly.

I'm a occasional sewer, but I'm trying to find a good starter machine for my sister. She's even less of a seamstress than I am.

Also I have heard there are machines with sealed gears that don't require oiling, is this one of them?
