Rayon! Comfortable, beautiful, drapes well, wrinkles hang out, takes color beautifully . . . cheaper than silk, three-season weight, more breathable than polyester and better if you have chemical sensitivities . . . so why is it harder than I remember to find good rayon prints? And why are so many of the ones you do find so lightweight?

I find most of my rayon at Fabricmartfabrics.com. I think they are thinner b/c current styles are using lighter, drapier fabrics. IMHO

I have purchased quite a few nice rayon challises at fabic mart in the last year. I have seen some lovely rayon twill at Sawyer Brook and Marcy Tilton that I'm eyeing...but it's hard to get over the sticker shock! I bought all sorts of rayon--woven and knit, at Elliott Berman In April, and I'm working thought it now...

One more idea: I am careful when hopping at fabric.com, but have had good luck when limiting my choices to designers such as Amy Butler, Anna Maria Horner, and Valorie Wells; all three have ventured into fashion fabrics lately, and have released rayon collections. I recently bought some if this, it washed up very soft:

Haha, I just went through some fabric today to make some dresses and it seems all I could find was rayon in the box I was digging through.

Most of them did come from fabric mart, but I have had good luck with challis from fabric.com.

I do have rayon knits from both as well, and while I have nice ones from fabric.com, it is thinner and not as nice as FM.

As to the weight, the challis is what I used to wear in the 90s when I discovered the fabric. Knits, well, I've had exceptional luck with Maggy London from FM and the one I am looking at is quite beefy for a med. weight knit.

I have rayons in all kinds of fabrics, so I would guess some depends on what type you are specifically looking for. I have all kinds of fabrics from slinkys, jerseys, challis and shirting to everything else in all kinds of weight.

I think it has to do with a specific search. It took months to track down a medium weight woven in red with a beach theme.
Lots of rayon, yes, but when it needs to meet a specific need them it gets harder to find. Plus I got so many hits with a blend and I wanted only 100% rayon. So that limited my selections as well.

Elliott Berman has a lot of it. http://www.elliottbermantextiles.com/

The photos on their website are frustratingly small, but they will ship samples. Their prices are very reasonable.

I agree with the post about fabric.com. Price is usually a good indicator. If it is 'cheap' so will be the quality. I bought some
Valori Wells, and it washed beautifully and is soft and drapey, but has a nice weight to it, not sheer or too light. Sawyer Brook has nice fabric, and again, you get what you pay for. Waechter's in NC (fabricandbuttons.com) also carries nice quality fabrics. As do emmaonesock.com and gorgeousfabrics.com. Things come and go fast on those two sites. I generally check their new items a few times a week.

Hancock's has Rayon Challis in some prints and solid colors. It is a nice weight for dresses and skirts. I like rayon too but it is harder to find than it used to be. JoAnn's hides it among their Silky prints. I wish there were more of a selection.
